  • In search of a new tip creating outlines on complex images

Hi Guys, I’m pretty up on X5 but there is still one thing I struggle with. How to create a boundary cut line on a complex image?

I have attached a vector as an example, I just cannot seem to get a 2mm outline around this image to create a cut, nor can I create a single boundary that will allow me to do the same.

I have tried weld, trim, simplify, combine but just cant seem to do it. I could to one by hand but that will take me ages. Anyone have any tips for this? I don’t want to cut detail into the image as I’m going to print it, I just want to cut the main outline shape.

Any help would be most grateful. I would appreciate the know how, rather than someone just doing it for me (cos I know some of you are going to do just that cos your so nice)

    Cheers

    Hi Mo

Try grouping all objects together, then ‘create boundary’. This should produce a single outline. You can then create a 2mm contour around this as your cut line.

Hi Bud, yes thats the normal way, I do that quite often but when you have a really comnplex shape like this it doesnt work very wel

lol don’t worry chris I solved my own question. I always post on here first before I go off and search for an answer. I can usually find an answer but posting here first usually saves me a shed load of time, otherwise it can take me hours.

Basically the solution I found was to create a boundary around the whole object and then make the line really thick, say 5-10mm depending on your graphic size. Then convert that to an object, break the curve apart, then you have iether an inner or an outer cut line.

I had to jiggle the nodes about a bit but in gen it worked really well.

No worries mate, I couldn’t open the design as I’m on my home computer. Glad you got it sorted – sounds like a good work around.

Instead of grouping them, can you not weld them all together – would that help?

must admit i have had some really complex ones that beat the system so coloured everything black created a hi res bit map that i traced for the outline path.

oh and if a dirty vector the using the snap to object draw a new vector and fillet to finish, quick and tidy

Must make a mental note not to reply to your questions for a few days.
