We recently bought machinery from the States and contacted the Inland Revenue to find out about the Import Tax. You have to tell them exactly what the item is as different things incur different levels of tax.

We bought a heat press and it worked out as follows:-

Import tax = (cost of item + carriage)x2.2%

This total is then multiplied by 17.5% to calculate your VAT

As I said, not everything is the same but this may give you a rough idea.

    Hi Mark,
Funny you should ask. Yesterday I had to find out if I could import some stuff when I travel to the UK in December. I found out loads of helpful info here http://www.hmce.gov.uk .

The couriers tend to charge extortionate prices for collection and delivery from customs

Just got two airbrushes from Kowloon and I was £30 for them about £120 for the goods
