I’ve been asked to come up with another caricature for a window splash, this time for a DIY store (I’ve run out of hairdressers :lol1: ) Anyway, the guy was impressed with the ‘Ave It Cut’ window splash I did, but he commented in a similar way to Big G, the skin tone is all wrong. It hasn’t been an issue really up to now, as the graphics I’ve done have been bold designs that were ment to shout out. This time I have to use the same style, but make the design more subtle. Thats the brief anyway 😀

So, my question is, where would I find a good quality vinyl (preferably the same charecteristics as Oracal 751) that is a good match to a regular caucasian skin tone? Because of the small amount needed, less than 5 metres, its not exactly worth me having a custom vinyl made up and the only other option I can come up with is spray painting clear vinyl with a suitable spray paint, again colour choice is somewhat limited.

Any ideas welcomed, I have plenty of time to work this one out as I’ve booked it in for the end of Feb, beginning of March. 😀

    Cheers, Dewi

have you tried 751 ivory dewi? lighter and not just as creamy as the cream 😕
i don’t have it handy, but 851 range has more colours/shades than the 751 range. so there maybe another few in that range that could be used.
we had same problem years back, we ended up going with X-film and a lghtish shade of pinky/peach… i saw it a few months ago, and though oh yueckk it was for babies on a van… looked more like red Indians. 😮

MacTac 9800 have a few different colours that could be used for flesh tones thats there equivalant to Oracal 751 (7-8 year).

    Cheers Chris 😀

Excellent, thanks chaps 😀 I’ll try and get hold of a swatch for MacTac.

I did find a possible if all else fails with what Andrew suggested. 851 series, 818 Saffron (?) Could imagine that not looking half bad when applied to glass. As you say Andrew, Ivory is an option also, but it would make the character in the window look a tad enemic I think 😮

Again, thank you for your help 😀

Dewi, as skin is not a colour, but many colours it would be hard to get anywhere near with vinyl, would it be possible to print the skin tones onto your image? as long as its not a charicature of a big busted naked lady, it shouldnt use a lot of print. just a thought.

    Thats just cheating Peter! :lol1:

Seriously though, thats a good idea, hadn’t thought about it that way. Again, I’d have to have it printed onto clear vinyl as its being applied to the inside of a window, but I could see that working quite well. More expensive than plain vinyl obviously, as the PC60 would struggle to flood a metre, let alone 5. I’d have to buy in trade at around £30 a metre 😕

Skin tone wise though, what I’m aiming for is similar tones that are used in comics such as the Marvel Comic books. They use two tones, one as the main skin colour, another for shadows on the skin. If I could guarentee I’d be getting the work to cover it, I’d order in a custom made colour of vinyl and get the exact colour I want, but at the moment I’m getting one a month of this type of work and once they’ve had it done, other than the odd A board and some business cards, its job done.

If you put up an outline for the person, Dewi,
you could fill it in with 1-Shot.
    Buy 3 half-pint cans,
Ivory, Salmon Pink, and Imitation Gold.
(If you can get quarter-pints, that would be even better)
Tint the ivory with the gold & pink to get any tone
from virginal flesh to ruddy drunkeness.
(use paper Dixie cups and a popsicle stick)
You can even add a bit of pink to the cheeks.
This can be applied with a Foamie or a good soft brush.
It scrapes off with a single-edged razor blade too.
    Love….Jill
