Idiot looking for assistance….
Posted by Marcella Ross on August 24, 2006 at 9:41 amOK …. I know some of you can do this with your eyes shut…. but I’m an idiot and haven’t done this before. 😳
I have been sent a jpeg of a customers logo…. not a big problem as it will be printed anyway. BUT, I want to remove the white background around it…… I also have another image which I want to use a part of and not the background.
I’m not familiar with Corel or Photoshop … never had the need to get to know these as I only ever cut vinyl and don’t print. I have Corel 12 and also Adobe Photoshop CS.
Can anyone tell me the EASIEST way of doing this. Which program would be best.
A step by step guide for complete beginners and thickos would be useful 😀thank you 😉

Hi,
You could use the Magic Wand tool on Photoshop. Select it by hitting ‘W’ on your keyboard. then click inside the part that you want rid of>youll see a selection marquee open (moving dashed lines), then right click inside that selection and choose Layer Via Cut and youll see you white background goto another layer. in that layer you can either right click and delete it or drag it down to the little dustbin at the bottom of the layers palette.>then save as normal
I think thats what you want to do, however id be happy to do it for you if you get stuck! mail me if you do..
good luck 🙂

Dave,
I’ll give that a go!
Think I’ll wait until after I’ve got my cutting out of the way … and my lunch. Then I may be able to get my head in gear with this! 😀

no worries 😉
If you do have problems, mail me the jpg in question and say what needs to be deleted, then ill make a simple tutorial of what i did for any future events you might encounter…

Marcella, Why dont you just do it in signlab? Use the vector tool to draw round what you want to keep, select the jpeg and the shape and just clip to get the required effect.

- In SignLab, double-click the jpeg to enter AccuScan editing mode.
- Above the Palette button is the Target Colour.
- By default, the Target Colour is white, though you can double-click to change that.
- Now, with the Target Colour set to white, press [Ctrl] and left-click the Target Colour.
- The white background of the jpeg will turn transparent.
Now, depending on the amount of compression, the jpegs may have some shading along the edges that were not set transparent. If so, then you are probably okay using the previous advice to set clipping lines around the edges.

As mentioned, use the Magic Wand tool, or for tricky jobs use the Quick Mask feature. Pressing the ‘ Q ‘ key will toggle the mode quickly.

Marcella was asking about PhotoShop, so I pointed her towards a tool that she would find easy and useful.
Sorry to confuse you.

Hi If the part you want to remove on the jpeg is quite even in tone and quality you could try the magic eraser( I had to look at how to spell erazor there).
one click to pick the tool and one click to remove the colour sometimes saves you a lot of sweat.
