    Hi all,
Hope you all had a good christmas. Had all the family round and the brother inlaw brought his nintendo Wii. What an excellent day, we had great food – had to say that as the wife was looking over my shoulder – and 8 hours of boxing, bowling and tennis. 1st time i’ve played on a Wii and am now aching in places I didn’t know you had muscles.

Looked all over the shops in Newcastle and the Metrocentre to buy one but they are all sold out apart from very expensive bundles costing the earth. oh well – just have to go to the gym – or the local as its sometimes called. 😉

    Have a good new year.

Happy New Year to you John,

As Mr Andy Gorman said in previous post the shops are really milking it with all the expensive bundles 🙁

Just had a look here http://www.wii-consoles.co.uk/ doesn’t look good 😕

i was in argos on christmas eve, they had at least 40 sitting behind the main shelves…£260 and came with 4 extra games on top of the others that come with it.
have to say though, was at my older brothers on boxing day for a meal and spent a sort time playing my nephews wei… it was the boxing one. as much as i was winning the game i wasnt really enjoying it. seems you have to always have the detection of device and paddles with what you are doing on your mind our swipes and punches dont go in. maybe i need to play it longer but was a bit of an anti climax for me finally getting a go on one.
think ill stick to my x-box online. 😉

    Hi Robert,
Been to the shops today and the only ones that had stock were wanting £350+ for the console and a few games/accessories. Argos had stock but would only sell it with the bundle.

About the boxing, I know what you mean, I went crazy and was knackered after 5 mins with a lot of missed shots. Brother inlaw didn’t move as fast and kept his punches to a minimum and scored alot more knockdowns. Bowling was great though with an inter-family competition on Christmas day.

    Cheers John

Just done our first CoD4 PC online match (although more of a muck about)… saw xbox live CoD4, I can say it is identical game except for the control nonsense.

Wii, like the concept of that thing, not used one but it is a winner for certain

Whilst not being as technically advanced as the other consoles, the wii control system is brilliant for anything that involves shooting Nazis or Zombies and the like. Resident Evil 4 is just the business!

Brother got me Guitar Hero for Christmas, just great! 😎

do you wear the hot pants and tight top when you play that to get into the role more john? :lol1: :lol1:

im gonna give it another go on my nethews at new year. maybe try a different game. i just thought the boxing was a bit ify because it didnt feel natural. like john says, you have to slow down and make sure the machine is detecting each swipe to be effective punches.

I was at a friends house the other day and watched my son and his friend play bowling, tennis, boxing and baseball and after watching my comments were……

    "I’d rather watch paint dry"

I couldn’t see the point in aimlessly swishing your arms about to a screen that wasn’t in sinc with what the players were doing. The ghosting of the player was most off putting as well.

    Is it me???? 🙄

I found the graphics very Teletubby babyish. I think that puts me off as well.

Where did I put my Pong!!

I had my first encounter with Wii this chrismas with our niece being around. We played tennis, boxing and golf. Great fun because it was such a novelty.
I don’t think I would get hooked on it though…… Why not go out and play the real thing?
We did wonder about those early days of computer games and how kids these days would react to games like ‘pong’ and ‘pacman’? They probably think we were mad thinking these games were sooo cool…. 😀

I’ve had a few goes on the WII. Remember that the boxing and things come free with the machine, they aren’t dedicated games. There good for a laugh but that’s about it. The single player games I played were addictive and very responsive – really good fun gaming! It’s not all energetic either – some are best played while lying on the couch I discovered!

Mike – all consoles/games are rubbish to watch, it’s about getting fired in there 😀

My Wii has been sidelined at the moment for my XBox but that might change again :lol1:

To get the full benefit of the wii you got to play games like Red Steel, Prince of Persia & Scarface

I got my Wii on launch date and have had just about everygame that has come out on the console…. some are crap and I mean crap though

I’ve never gotten into games consoles at all – though my son is fanatical about them. He got a wii last year and I was impressed with the way the console allows you to interact with the games. My interest in computers first came about in the late 1980’s when I was sent on a course to learn to use a system for writing training packages to be used on a PC. The system was called "Pixie". I actually believe this course changed my life as it was responsible for introducing me to the PC (and consequently was one of the threads that eventualy led me into becoming a signmaker). Back then I was fired with enthusiasm about all of the possibilities with computers and games. Virtual reality was also being talked about as the next big thing. With a true virtual reality system you are literally immersed in the game. You wear a headset that feeds a stereoscopic view of the games environment along with stereo sound. Motion sensors also detect the movements of your body and head so that you can move around in the virtual world. All this was happening back in the late 1980’s early 1990’s when a company called W industries started to introduce virtual reality simulators into games arcades. I am seriously disappointed that almost 20 years later with home gaming systems and computers that are many times more powerful than those of 20 years ago – we still don’t have proper virtual reality games in the home. The Wii is one step closer but still miles away from offering a gaming system where the player is truly immersed in the games artificial environment.

I fail to understand why this is the case. With such a huge industry I would have thought the first company to produce a home based virtual reality console would have cleaned up in a big way. For some reason, they have all stood back and with held these features from their consoles. At last the wii uses motion sensors to allow you to interact with games in a more natural way. But what is needed is the fully immersed gaming system with head mounted stereoscopic displays and full body motion sensors. Now with the internet, there is no reason why we can’t have a virtual reality system that connects people in such a way that they truly feel they are together in the same space. Maybe all this is coming – but why is it taking so long to come about when the theory and methods for creating this environment have been known about and been around for so long already.

Or am I missing the point here 😕

I know what you mean Phill.

On a similar note, I’m a bit disappointed with space exploration. It’s nigh on forty years since Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, and there’s not been a lot of obvious progress since. 🙁

I find the the wii more of a novelty machine not a serious gaming machine, but I enjoy playing it, especially lego starwars, me and the boy running round the livingroom with the wi-mote as the lightsaber :lol1: and I enjoy bass fishing 😎 :lol1: , but its all just for fun.

you got me thinking here Phil…..in the same period of time we have gone from dot matrix printers to Lab quality printers for the home, for less than 50 quid…..I agree …we seem to be being drip fed improvements in certain areas of technology

its for the same reasons we dont have 3d tv, cars that hover, and drive themselves, and robots that do all the work, and free fuel made from water.

sci-fi is imagination, some of it comes true, but not all is possible. the technology for total immersion games hasn’t happened yet, it was only a possibility of what could happen, but in retrospect. was never available. we are still waiting for it…

I would say that’s exactly whats happening Glenn, a lot of it is out there they just don’t want us to have it yet 😕 same with PC’s and fuel for cars etc etc….

Holographic TV’s will be with us within 5 years I reckon.

I sort of agree with you Peter , but I’m sure half of what we thought could never be achievable is out there ready to be produced with a few tweaks here and there for the mass market, when the time is right.

Could be totally wrong of course 😕

Very interesting! Being young and seeing these on the telly while I was playing amstrads and commadore 64’s we really though we would have our own virtual reality simulators by now. They had them on program’s like gamesmaster and they looked awesome. I read about it recently and seemingly they were crap. I don’t think they ever really got the technology to a useable level. You have to remember also that hi-tech isn’t always better. There are few games that will ever be as good as mario kart on the snes – and that was 10 years ago! They come out with faster machines and better graphics, but really it’s all about playability and whether that’s with a controler / wii control / virtual reality is beside the point if the game is rubbish. I’m a big first person shoot em up fan and in the past spent too much time playing Quake online. Now I don’t really play games too much as I would spend far too long at it and I have other things I should be doing!

Ahh Gavin what taste you have, I saw her in Pantomime one year and also bought my better half the Diane Youdale (Jet) keep fit video.

She never did follow the routines but I still watched the Video 😀
