I have encountered a problem this evening which I am hoping the collective genius that is the uksignboards will help me solve 😀

Our family PC has tonight stopped responding to keyboard and mouse. Even after powering off and switching back on the kelyboard and mouse do not respond.

I have tried rebooting with a startup disc in drive a – but still there is no response from the keyboard or mouse.

The PC runs with windows 98 second edition. I am using AVG antivirus software (which I haven’t updated for about a year 😕 ) – the automatic virus scan during the initial boot up says no viruses found. However, I suspect that the problem may be a virus?

I am using normal keyboard and mouse connections (i.e not usb).

Under the current circumstances I can’t even re-format and start again as I have no control over the PC at any stage during startup.

I’ve tried pressing esc. and F1 during boot up but all keyboard commands are ignored by the PC.

My son is heartbroken because all his games (and current saves) are on this PC and I’ve told him that we may lose all of the information on it.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong? and how to fix this?

I’m pretty sure someone out there will know the answers.

I’ve done a yahoo search on keyboard and mouse freezing up – but in all cases I have looked at the fix is to re-boot. There is no mention of cases where the Keyboard and mouse remain useless after re-booting.

(I am logged on here using another PC in case you’re wondering).

    😥

Does the PC boot up into windows or just hang and freeze?
Does the keyboard light come on ?
Is there an error message whilst booting?
There is a solution if there is a major problem with your PC , take out your drive , set the jumper to slave mode (you will see it at the back of the drive) , insert it into another PC and copy the contents over , at least your data will be ok and you might be able to runs most stuff without a reinstall
win2k pro is actually the best system to run if you HAVE to run bloze;)
    Then comes XP pro
I suspect if both keyboard and mouse dont work , its something to do with the motherboard , or perhaps a loose board in the puter.
Generally problems with the motherboard will emit a series of beeps on boot and those beeps are a code as to whats wrong.

A virus is unlikely as it would generally give a more distressing message , like format c:/ 😉

I’ve a similar set up and this happened to me once. Unfortunately I can’t remember how I remedied the situation but will ask my usual source of PC genius, the brother in law to see what he says. I know that I didn’t have to go to any great lengths to sort it.

Have you tried unpugging everything from the mains, leaving it for a while and trying it again? May sound silly but this is the best way to ‘repair, phones and faxes etc.,

    Thanks for your replies.

This morning the problem was the same as last night so I went into work and borrowed another keyboard to try.

I plugged in the replacement standard keyboard – and everything was fine again (Including the mouse). When I reverted back to the original keyboard the problem returned so it looks like the keyboard itself has developed a fault.

    Problem solved 😀

(I couldn’t try this solution last night because the other PC at home is a laptop ).

So much for me panicking last night. And just goes to prove to try the simple solutions first before looking for complicated solutions 🙄

Phill you beat me to it, as i read your first post i thought to myself i bet he hasn’t tried a different keyboard!!

This came to mind as i recently spend 3 hours trying to figure out what was wrong with my brothers new super duper computer. He was using his old monitor a very small ancient space saving device on which the screen was all scrambled and he couldn’t see a thing, so he came up to london, 1.5 hour drive, computer in tow, i spent ages uninstalling and re-installing the drivers downloaded updated drivers from the net but nothing worked, formated the drive re-installed windows still no good. it was time for my brother to go home again and i thought i’d just try it with my monitor and hey presto all was fine.

The old monitor he was using couldn’t pick up decode what ever it does the signals the graphics card was sending!! the graphics and resolution had to be set at the basics for the old monitor to work – simple as that.

    (:)

Very common problem is a single key stuck down.
Turn it upside down and whack it a few times!
Still for £12 you could junk it and get a new shiny one.
