    Why?

because a company I have done signs for in the past has decided to “go upmarket”.

Previously I always produced the designs and layouts for their signs. However, they have now decided to use the services of a “designer” to produce the layouts for me to make the signs from. Today I was sent this layout to make a new sign for them:-

Am I missing something – I think this is rubbish!!

i can sort of see what they are attempting to acheive in the design phill, but for a design company to sell their ability to design! your right, its total rubbish ๐Ÿ˜€

There are a few categories of people I don’t deal with.

    Estate Agents are one.

I was thinking of doing something myself – but thought why bother – this company obviously has no idea of class ๐Ÿ™„ – and would they recognise it when they see it. Maybe if it was priced sky high they would think it was good ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

Didn’t see your picture Rob – can you post it again please ๐Ÿ˜€

๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† i didnt post one mate but actualy went to do one.. just realised i dont have signlab loaded as yet.. just reformated my comp and trying to get everything back as i had it.. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ™
these type of designs arent that hard.. its more to the layout than the artwork. well positioned decent fonts and a little bit of originality here and there is all thats needed.

your right though.. over priced and they think it “must” be good look at the bill.. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† clowns

Quite agree Phill absolute rubbish, go on have a go yourself, you will, you will, you will ๐Ÿ˜† hah graphic designers ๐Ÿ˜ก they should stick to designing print, get mikes cd out and have a go tell you what lets all have a go, give us an idea of budget and when they want it what sort of company etc. once had a “graphic designer” (23 yr old spotty little tosser) (you bet I swore sometimes my limited lincolnshire vocabulary fails me and they can only be described as t**ts ๐Ÿ™‚ ) tell me he was a better designer than me because he had a degree, funny how I last saw him working in the bakery at Tesco’s (Now I’ve nowt against bakers me dad was one before he retired ๐Ÿ˜† )

Had a similar thing happen, customer brought in designs that had been done for him, which he paid over ยฃ300 for ๐Ÿ˜ฎ He originally went to a design company to create a logo for him, but got carried away by them & they ended up designing his signage, headed paper, business cards, everything! I did a few designs of my own, just to point out how the layout could look much better………. he ended up using our designs, not the designers.

    Have a go yourself ๐Ÿ˜€

I do think youโ€™re all being a bit hard on this โ€œdesignerโ€, after all heโ€™s put those wonderful little lines under the โ€˜Sโ€™ and โ€˜Oโ€™ so what more could you possibly want! ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

I decided to get my designer ๐Ÿ˜€ (Alison) to have a go at this. The rules were – don’t spend too long and use the fonts and colours used in the original design. This is what she came up with:-

Incidently – I’m told the sign was to measure 8×4 – the artwork sent was in the proportions 6×4.

If anyone else wants to have a go – I’ve posted the eps file of the original design under file swapping

    Hi Phil

Dont give the designer to much of a hard time even if his design is poo
If you do a really good job and make him look good he may well become your next customer and because there so stuck up thier own crevice

They will stand a heftier bill than most normal customers ago so you have to bite your lip and pull your hair occaisionaly but trust me designers on the whole are profitable customers in my book.

The down side if you make your customer look like a fool for using a designer is the loss of a customer. Just get him to supply it on a disk cut it complain gently how you have had to adjust the sign slightly to acomodate the new design and charge him 10% more than last time ๐Ÿ˜†

Is that the way that musto normaly is or are we taking somebody elses copywright material here to play with ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Good advice Bob, I think you’re right with your thinking. ๐Ÿ˜€

As far as copyright goes – the first picture I posted here was the first time I’d seen “Musto” done that way – however, on looking at their new website – I see that this style has been adopted there also, so this must be the new “Corporate” look ๐Ÿ˜†

Same ‘ol story with these ‘graphic designers’ (:) (:)

But I find the same true with customers who have had their letterheads and cards done. They love them and want them incorporated in their main signage. ๐Ÿ™„ ๐Ÿ™„

I don’t have much difficulty dissuading some from following this path. Sometimes this is accomplished with just a few ruled lines around their artwork representing what I perceive to be the approximate shape of their fascia.

They quickly see their artwork doesn’t always fit ๐Ÿ˜ฅ ๐Ÿ˜ฅ and a great deal of amendment needs to take place. I then offer to do a few layouts for them

    Normally works

    Hey Phil,
your design was heaps better. I find however, that I tend to pick up some good work by dealing with designers and print shops. They design the stationery, and I do the vehicles and building.

Anyway if your customer goes for the other sign…Their loss mate.

Neil reminded me that I never concluded this topic.

We ended up doing Alisons layout. I never pushed it on the client – but he did phone me about the original design proposed and expressed his dissapointment with it. As a result I showed him Alison’s layout and he asked us to produce these instead.

Neils Layout was never shown to the customer even though I’m convinced he would have gone for this instead. The only reason I never showed him Neils was because the graphic (Neils Artistic license) wasn’t of the actual development – and I’m sure the developer would have asked me to reproduce his actual development along the lines of Neils layout. I decided to keep it simple (and therefore not put any more time into this job – which we were already doing anyway). Maybe I should have done this and “Upsold” the job – but the design was Neils anyway and I hadn’t been given his permission to use it.

    Thanks anyway Neil ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks Phil actually all my insperation came from musto’s own web site and the graphic was of champfleurie mews pasted straight out of the web site
Re using the layout It would have been a complement if you had, any designs or ideas I post here are public domain and you are welcome to use them my only condition would be to see a picture of the finished job to see how it all turned out.

    Regards Neil………

Sorry Neil – I didn’t realise it was from Musto’s own website – I just assumed it was artwork you had used to illustrate a point (i.e – how the sign could be done).

I think I wasted an opportunity here, I hereby resolve to try and be more open to new ideas and suggestions ๐Ÿ˜€

But as I said in another forum – I’m not keen to spend time doing speculative artwork. Even so I do admit that I do not always follow my own advice ๐Ÿ˜‰
