I’ve just ordered a Graphtec CE3000-60 plotter from Neil at GraphtecGB and all being well, it’ll be here in the morning. Looks like I’m virtually in business at last. 😀

I’d like to publically thank Robert for all his help and advice with this. As some of you will know, GraphtecGB is now a supplier to the UKSignGroup, so if anyone else is interested in buying a plotter atm, it’s well worth emailing/PMing Robert requesting a bit of info on the deals available.

I kind of told a fib in the title of this post because I lack any vinyl stock atm, so I doubt very much I’ll be cutting in the morning 🙁 But there is a pen with the plotter, so I can do a few test runs and get used to using it. 🙂

    Cheers, Dewi

Thank you Alan, Mort and Chris. 😀 Unfortunately I have been in and out of the house since the plotter arrived or on the phone, so I haven’t even had a chance to play with it properly 🙁 Hopefully I’ll get a chance tomorrow 🙂

This may sound a tad missy or soppy, but it really is a fine looking piece of kit. I’ve seen a few different plotters since I arrived at UKSB, but this has got to be the smartest (I would say that though, having bought it 😉 ) Everything is in that was s’posed to be in, I had a USB cable already which is cool and the guy who’s just fixed my comp added an extra USB port or so to it so I can now plug my plotter, my camera and my tablet in, all at the same time 😀

Looking forward to getting stuck in obviously, I’d like to try out what I’ve learnt up to now. Oh and Mort, got Call of Duty, had a quick go and I think its fantastic… shame the enemies are daft as brushes, they keep walking in front of the guns 😉

If I can get this silly grin off my face, I’ll do some cutting 🙂

p.s. Don’t forget to set up the cutting depth on your new plotter for that vinyl before you get stuck in 😉

    Dewi….
Is it soup yet? (from an old TV commercial here)
I remember getting my plotter set up, all excited, etc.
Then came time to weed the vinyl after I got the cutting weight right…
o joy! Then the application tape…even MORE fun!
Then at last the time came for sticking the stuff…
I just wanted to go & grab my #6 quill & a can of 1-Shot.
After 7 years of cutting stickers, I still hate it, but I still do it.
It’s what folks want, and if you design it right, it can be a beautiful thing.
Gotta go cut some o dat demon vinyl now! (hot)
Have fun & remember not to wear a fuzzy sweater whilst weeding!
Darn lint gets everywhere! And if you have a pug dog like me,
watch out for shedded fur! Makes lumps under your stickers!
    Love- JILL

This may be a bit of a numb skull question, but here goes 🙂

I did as suggested by Nigel, set the depth of the blade… it is cutting the vinyl perfectly, and leaving a slight impression on the backing paper, is it okay to continue to cut like that?

    Cheers, Dewi

Nice one, thanks for that Mort 😀

I’ll probably reread this thread in a couple of months and chuckle, but at this particular moment even setting the cutting speed is a challenge let alone the depth 🙄 I’ll keep at it, just didn’t want to damage anything. Thanks again Mort 😀

Reduce the force, if your scoring the backing paper your cutting to deep, you don’t need to cut this deep, Noticed your using 751 at the mo but if you ever change always do a test first.

As for cutting speed i have mine set to minimum.

Hi Dan, thank you.. just altered the pressure force from 12 to 9 and it isn’t leaving an impression now 😀

Finally getting used to altering all the settings now, even though I’ve been reading the manual for days now 🙄

    Cheers, Dewi

Edit: Forgot to say, reduced cutting speed from 30 to 15, least it doesn’t look like its having a fit every time it cuts now 😉

Sounds like you got it sussed now mate 😉

Re. Dans comment – I personally think that you should be leaving a slight impression in the backing paper, but not so much that if you flex the paper it “opens up” the cut otherwise it could be a nightmare to remove the backing paper when applying.

Also it is very handy to have a mark on the paper when you need to are laying up multi coloured designs – you can just cut all shapes in one colour vinyl and then peel away the ones you don’t want and replace them by hand with different colour sections. Unless its too complicated in which case youd use reg marks.

Also if you happen to have a little mistake and remove a letter while weeding, you can see where it needs to go back using the indentation.

As you say, best to run the machine slower Dewi, its less wear and tear and will give better service for longer.

But thats just my thoughts 🙂

was just reading the replies and thought the same as Nigel, I prefer an impression in the backing paper so if I tear one of those legs off small letters than you can see where to replace a newly cut one (maybe it is a sign of a novice).

I am still waiting for a workshop so I can get started for real, hopefully first week in Feb.

Wishing you all the best Dewi

    Sorry Dewi….

I agree with both the above, with the impression, i took it you was cutting into the backing paper.

I Stand corrected, and appologise if i was steering you in the wrong direction.

Need to explain myself better in the future.

No worries 😀 I’m getting good at altering these settings now.

I’m having a little problem communicating with the plotter at the moment, I think it may be the parallel cable I’ve used. I’m going to switch it to USB in a bit and try that.

I really appreciate and advice on this guys, its making it alot easier to get started the right way 😀

Okay, not a cable problem, its definately software related. Tried both parallel and USB 😕

If I haven’t got it going by morning Neil, I will ring 🙂 I realise I’m an oddball, I like trying to do things the hard way 😉 I’m learning alot about the plotter in the process though 😀

I have a few more ideas to try, and I’ll read the manual again. All being well, ‘I’ll be cutting by the morning’ 😉 😉

Amazing!! I install a trial version of SignGo, specify the plotter and 2 seconds later I manage to cut my son’s name out of vinyl!!!! 😀 😀

So, there we go, I still have lots of learning to do, but the plotter is cutting no problems 😀 😀 And my son is having a whale of a time sticking his name onto the furniture 😉

Again, thank you everyone for your help getting me going 😀 Now, where did I see that pop art demo…. 😉 😉 😉

    Hi Chris,

Plotter going great, really enjoying it. I’ve done a few test cuts, and last night with the aid of some 2″ masking tape (no application tape so… 😕 ) I applied some lettering to my little lad’s bedroom door (Mini-Dewi’s Room 😀 ) Its all good fun 😀

SignGo is a inexpensive independant sign package, much like SignLab, but about a 10th of the price.

    http://www.signgo.com/index.html

Hopefully there’ll be a head to head demo featuring SignLab and SignGo, mainly to show what SignGo offers for the money and to see whether it compares to SignLab. I think it was Lorraine that suggested it originally, its a great demo idea. I downloaded it again last night to test with the plotter and in literally 10 seconds I’d done my first cut. Its a fantastic bit of software thats easy to use and great value for money. 😀

    Hi Phill,

All being well I will get the keys back from the tenant in the morning, so I take ‘possession’ as it were tomorrow 😀 The shopfitter is booked in for Friday (spoke to him again today) so all being well I should be open for business by the end of the month 😀 😀 Its taken about 6 weeks to sort out everything from the plotter, stock, training and various other things to the stage I’m at now, so another fortnight shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Really looking forward to getting it going, and up to now I have had 5 customers preorder signs and printing work, so it seems I’m going to have a good start 😀

    Cheers, Dewi
