  • I am having trouble with application tape.

    Hi there,

I have been supplying vinyl to customers to fit themselves and a few of them have mentioned that they had real trouble getting the vinyl to come away from the backing paper and stick to the application tape.

I tested this myself and found that the application tape i’m using really doesn’t seem that great.

    It’s called ‘perfect clear maintape’.

It’s not the totally clear see through application tape, i have never really used that. It’s the papery type.

I have never really had this trouble before so i am wondering if it’s this particular brand of application tape?

Are there different grades or qualities of application tape? Or could there be any other reason i’m having this problem.

    Thanks

    Liam

Technique might have something to do with it, tell customers to put graphic face DOWN and take backing from the face.

You are probably using a low tac application tape that’s used for very large pieces of vinyl. Try switching to a high-tac tape, either from the same, or different supplier. Perfect tear is a good one, though I’ve no complaints using q tape from Robert Horn.

Just remember to get high tac for small & fiddly bits, medium tac for general stuff like signage & vans, & low tac for big stuff. It might also be a good idea to tell your customers to re-squeege the app tape onto the vinyl once they receive it.

    Cheers,

    Gwaredd.

Liam we use perfect tear hi-tac and never had a problem, another thing could your plotter be cutting a bit too deep, which would hinder the graphics coming off the backing paper.

    Hi
thanks all for your responses. I think you may have solved the problem for me, as it’s always the smaller stuff they are having trouble with.

I think i need to get some high tac, could either of you recommend a good supplier for me.

Many thanks again for your advice i really appreciate it.

we always use Cherwell, but ask your main supplier, if you buy all you stuff from them they should be able to do you a good deal, or if you have time to spare phone around and get some prices.

Application tapes are a bit like vinyl in that different people prefer and get on better with different brands. If you are happy with your current supplier and the application tape they provide then I would just stick with them but ask them for the high tac paper tape instead of what they have been supplying. Like Lynn has said you could also check the plotter is not cutting to deep and also make sure you squeegee the graphics properly when you apply the application tape.
