How to use and look after a mug press
Posted by John Gregson on November 5, 2009 at 8:15 pmI’m happy with the mug press I bought and it works fine but need a little info.
1, When you first switch it on do you have to have a mug in the press while the heater gets up to temperature.
2, If leaving for a few days do you keep a mug in the press with the pressure on.
I’ve done a few sample mugs and am really happy with the results – just a bit unsure on how to look after the press.
Cheers John

I switch onto heat with no mug in the press….if mugs are really cold I heat them a little in the press before attaching the sublimation paper to the mug.
I leave it with no mug in the press.
Never had any problems with mine this way.

Cheers John – thought i’d have to leave a mug in so the blanket would keep its shape when not in use – its another learning curve but fun. 😀

i do leave mine closed over but not under any tension no mug in it, thinking that is its natural shape.
wrap the mug in grease proof paper to prevent dirt from the blanket transferring.
most helpful tip i got was remove the transfer paper and dunk the mug straight in to a bucket of warm water to stop the process.

Hi Chris, I’d heard about the dunking in luke warm water but not the grease proof paper – good idea.

Our supplier told us to use a sacrificial mug and leave in press (Closed)when not in use. we also do the initial warm up with mug in press.
Most strange of all we only use 180 degree for 8 seconds no problems at all and some mugs have been used for 18months with dishwasher etc.
I know this is really different to any body we have spoken to but when we started that’s the info we were given and has worked.

Hi Michael,
God that’s a short time – on my instructions it was 160 degrees for 3 minutes and its worked perfect. I suppose it must be different depending on mug, ink, press and printer. -
Surely 8 seconds would not be long enough for the mug to heat up?

Hi John & Gorden
the 8 seconds count down starts when the mug reaches 180. May be that’s the difference. All I know is that we have had no problems at all and we have done hundreds of mugs. everybody chokes when we tell them but for us it works maybe it is the warm up factor that we don’t include but others do. when we load a cold mug the temp drops to 128 and then starts to warm up when it reaches 180 the machine starts the count down (8 seconds) and then beeps like hell at us.I have never timed exactly how long the mug is in the press for but I will try to remember to do that next time.

Hi Michael,
I see what you mean now but if you take the warm up time into consideration it will probably be the same. My temp gauge does go down quite a bit while pressing but I start the clock when I put the mug in the already hot press.Cheers John
