  • how to remove a mini badge?

Posted by Warren Beard on June 30, 2011 at 8:32 am

Have a last minute job coming in and would be easier for me if I could remove the badge rather than cut around it?

    cheers

    😉

Seriously, I’d imagine it’s either fixed with D/S tape, or clip fixings that will be accessible inside the bonnet. Worse case, if you do snap it off by accident, D/S tape with put it right & no-one need ever know!

they are just stuck on with ds tape Warren.
if you warm up slightly, and pull off carefully they can normally be re-used.

various ways to remove badges, but be very careful you don’t damage the paintwork.

the way i do it and find it most convenient and quick is to use two old nylon squeegees.

heat the badge "area" of the van. not the badge itself as such. you want to soften the adhesive gripping the van, not the adhesive gripping the badge.
if you heat the badge WILL come off, but will leave the foam stick tape because the van surface is colder than the badge. if that makes sense?

do not lever the badge off with anything without there being some form of protection of the paint on the opposite end of the badge.
when you lever the badge up to prize it off, the other end comes into contact with the van surface and can damage the paint.
this is where I jam an old squeegee under the badge. then price it off from the other end. this way one squeegee is doing the levering, the other protecting the van surface.

you can also use some fishing line. wrap some fishing line round something like 2 clothes pegs. the pegs are your handles.
put the line behind the badge and holding the two pegs, drag/pull downwards. the line will cut down thru the software foam stick double-sided tape.
again, softening the panel with a heat gun aids this.

a simple way to remove the adhesive is by using Tar & Glue remover
simply dab on some of it over the area, leave a couple of minutes and dab again and wipe. it will come off easily.
once-off, wipe off the Tar and glue remover with isopropanol or meths

do not get caught up in the whole customer complaint of "i wanted those badges" if the customer wants them and not broken, ask them to remove them. this is not your problem. if they are so important they should really have been removed prior to your arrival.
if the customer stands his ground your easily looking at £25 for a new set.
