  • How to mount vinyl using laminator?

Posted by David Hammond on June 24, 2011 at 9:09 am

I have been mounting some digital vinyl onto correx this morning.

The way I was shown when I got the training on the laminator was to:

Align the print, tape across the print about 2-3 inches from the end of the board. Peel back the print on the 2-3 inch section and apply by hand.

This 2-3 inch piece goes into the laminator, and happily peel off the backing paper to get a lovely finish.

My problem is I always seem to get wrinkles, bubbles etc in the first part I do, and a perfect finish from the laminator.

I am assuming that is my fault, and my slight lack of patience. I don’t have a problem when using thicker vinyl flood coating, or laminated prints. Just unlaminated digital vinyl.

    Any suggestions/pointers welcome.

Have a look on this video- what are you doing differently?

I was sticking the 1st 2-3 inches by hand, then loading that into the rollers… but will certainly try that way. Only problem with that is my roll of backing paper from the laminate unrolls…

    I will certainly be experimenting.

    David,

Have a look at this one:

    Great Video.

I have an easy mount laminator, so the backing paper isn’t a problem when laminating. I only keep my gloss and matt on the spindles. I rest my scuff resistant on top quite like the video.

I am going to have an afternoon of playing 🙂

My only other trouble I have with my laminator is getting the print in square… practice and patience will make it perfect.

    Thanks for the links :thumbup2:

I have a really naff laminator, it was really cheap from china, but I get perfect lams every time. A couple of tricks I learned, I have marked the eaxact middle of the laminator with a sharpie so I can align everything directly in the middle when laminating, also don’t put too much pressure on the rolls, it takes a bit of perfection but I use it for just about everything from correx to acrylic…. occasionally I screw up and get wrinkles, but I do it the same way that you do, stick the first part by hand and then run it through….. One thing you may want to try just to perfect your technique, try laminating by hand the same as you would when you wrap a vehicle or lay a large section of printed vinyl. I get good results that way too, and you learn loads

I had a play yesterday, but will be trying it out on a ACM sign I have for next week.

I think it is because the digital vinyl is quite elastic, and it stretches easily.

If your putting composite through a laminator then make sure the edges are de-bured first. Would imagine a rough edge could do quite a bit of damage to the rollers.

    Cheers Guys.

I mounted the laminated print onto composite without a hitch, using the technique above. 😀 Really happy with the result.

I de-burred the composite, I always seem to find the skin lifts a little along the cut, so it’s not perfectly flat?

I seen a thread earlier with a link to the Wikisignpedia and worked really well.

I’ve been a member on other forums and paid sub’s, and seen no improvements. Great to see the site going from strength to strength. 😀

This tube thingy is quite useful- although, to outsiders it might be considered quite a deviation to use it like ‘this-other-most-popular-video-site’ and click from one video to the other, then to the other and then to the other, just to click on to the next one :-). But hey, no one can see me doing it. :bigwink:

And the toolbar keeps evolving as well, just like a whole new universe growing in my yesterday’s coffee cup 🙂 :uksbrules:
