  • How to apply square cut vinyl to curved surface?

    Hello gang,

I am new to vinyl application and would like a bit of advice how to tackle what must be a simple thing once you know how..
I have a surface that curves outwards in all directions, as indicated in the image, and have a cut vinyl graphic to apply. The thin border that is about 4mm in width.
The logo I was planning to just cut out of the green graphic as it needs to be black and is going on a black substrate anyway.

So would like to know how you all would go about this please?

Sorry if it seems a bit silly but would rather ask go about it incorrectly..

    Kind regards,

    Jon

I would say you cant. you will need to create a slit in the vinyl at least once.
there is ways to butt join it using a cut, but unless you are using a decent cast vinyl it will open slightly.
i would suggest creating mitre cuts in the green lines at the corners.

Your main issue will be the carrying paper as it want conform at all.

if you apply the green to the black, over sizing the black and using some heat starting from the centre working out you may get it on without a join, but you will distort that straight lines. you will then have to trim the black.

Fair enough Rob, thanks for your input.
I had done a test and ended up cutting the green in one spot and overlapping it by a couple mil. Will try a butted join also as would look a little neater.

Thought about applying the green to a piece of black vinyl and then applying that so there wouldn’t be any need for the transfer paper.
Would there be any issues with applying 2 layers of vinyl at once? Bubbles etc? Should an air release vinyl be used for the bottom/black layer of vinyl?

    Kind Regards,

    Jon

it really all depends on your application process on whether bubbles will be an issue or not.
Multi-layers of vinyl can and often do create bubbles due to the step-layers of vinyls and your squeegee passing over them can miss expelling air from beneath. However, i don’t see this being as big an issue as creases will be for you.
Bubble free vinyl may help reduce bubbles but dependant on which type you use the grain of the air channel in the adhesive can actually promote creases in some instances. depends on how big that graphic is i guess.

you could print the graphics, meaning one layer, but you still have to negotiate the curved surface and distortion once in place. Its not impossible but depends on how curved your surface is… unless the customer is going to pay for your effort, ide simply create cuts.

Not a big profit job but I would always like to know how to do something the best way possible and work backwards from there should it be required.
    Thanks for the input Robert.
