  • how much to charge for planning permission?

    We’ve just successfully completed and had accepted, planning permission for a single projecting sign box for our client and I was wondering what the going rate other sign companies would charge for this service?

    The customer’s designers supplied pdf drawings, so we only needed to fill in the 4 copies of application forms and send in the £95 application fee to the council, then do some follow up phone calls which amounted to another hour of admin.

    Any advice on a guide cost for this sort of work would be appreciated.

    Did you not agree an hourly rate beforehand. When we apply for planning we agree a hourly rate fee for any follow up phone calls and a fixed rate for submitting the drawings.

    As James has said, I think that you made a mistake by not agreeing this beforehand. Now you’ve left yourself open to a disagreement because your client probably thinks that it is all part and parcel, and a service you offer for free.

    I’d go with my normal hourly rate for the time taken

    just double it, i usually do, and once you get slick with it, and gain a relationship with the council, you can push it through, as it were. (:)

    I never apply for planning on anybody’s behalf.

    Entirely the clients responsibility.

    I’ll provide specs, coshh or method statements if required.

    But part with no cash on their behalf.

    Thanks for your opinions/advice

    I’m going to go with charging the hourly rate plus cost of application fees (£95) which seems the fairest way to invoice the customer.

    Don’t often do planning applications but for your best customers, it’s an additional service that you can help them out with and if it makes their life easier, then the’re less likely to think about going elsewhere 😀
