• How Many Spoils

Posted by Emily on December 4, 2009 at 12:33 am

just a question to clear up something really, but out of the mug printers that read this amongst you, how many spoils would you expect on average to have out of a box of 36 mugs. i ask this because my dad gets around 8 per box, he says about three mugs he can’t use, chips and such, and then say 5 where the print goes wrong

would you say 8 is too many??

its a while since I did mugs, but I would say that 5% would be the maximum limit that i would expect. any more and you should be looking at what you are doing wrong

    too many…

i have a full sublimation, t-shirt etc etc setup but seldom use it, so my knowledge is limited here…
done quit allot of mugs so far and never had any mug rejects/couldnt use as such.
as for miss prints… as long as you are concentrating on your process, i don’t see why you really should get any miss prints. if you do its normally down to human error… not allowing the press to heat up properly, not taping into place properly etc etc practice makes perfect here i think… for arguments sake ide allow two from a box. but thats maybe just me and as i said, im certainly no professional at doing this.

I looked at mug printing a while back. I didn’t go ahead for various reasons, and if I do any now, Pauly on these boards is now doing it, so he will get the business.

But, that said, I wouldn’t accept any damage stock from my supplier. But I’d accept that mistakes are made, and probably an average of 2 or 3 duds per box wouldn’t be an issue. More than that and I’d start questioning my process to see what was going wrong.

8 per box is very high, I haven’t had any damaged mugs for ages, possibly down to the way they are packaged by my current supplier.

Been through 3 boxes of Xpres and no damaged mugs so far. Bought cheaper mugs from Lovecut and for the price they are OK but there’s plenty of imperfections on the glaze and around the bottom of the mug. None chipped and all usable – both kinds came out of the dishwasher OK.

As for printing I’ve had a few bad prints at first but its all about getting to know the process and the equipment. After realising that my cheap press couldn’t do full wraps I’ve reduced my template by 5mm top and bottom, 10mm either side of handle and haven’t had one bad print since.

    Cheers John

Two mugs per box max and that is usually my fault, too short/long time in the press or the transfer not put on right. Out of my last order of 120 mugs, not one faulty.
Look at what you are doing, must be something wrong there. Or I see from the posts you have made that you always want the cheapest mugs possible . Maybe its down to "you get what you pay for"? Spend 20p more and get something decent. The loss of those 8 mugs pays for the better mugs.

just opened box 11 from a 15 box order of Nova chrome mugs with the rhino coating and haven’t had 1 bad mug yet, hopefully the other 4 boxes will be spot on to.
