  • how good is Clear Application Tape?

Posted by juddr on September 2, 2004 at 8:28 pm

hi there, we have never used the clear app-tape before but our supplier is doing a special and we can get this for just under the price we normally pay for the paper stuff,. i know a couple of times i have wished i had the clear stuff, if i buy a roll of this can it be used in place of the paper stuff (ie used instead of the paper type for most jobs??) I was just about to put an order in and noticed there special so thought i might ask here.

    cheers!!

I use the clear app tape regularly, and indeed know people who use it almost exclusively. There are different clear tapes on the market so it depends which one you are getting if you get on with it or not.
I used to use one which was very static and aweful to use but the one I use now is kind of textured and great.

    Hope this helps

We don’t seem to get on with the clear app tape. But I guess everyone has their own preferences and ours is that we prefer paper, find it easier to work with.

Ryan you probably need to work with it and gather your own opinion on it, if its on offer then maybe not a bad idea to order some aswell as the other and try it?

ive tried it and as much as i know it helps heaps to apply multi -layers i hate the feel and cant get on with it when applying to vehicles etc.
it can be used for everything, i also have heard folk that do..
my grind is that it doesnt tear the way i want it to.. (some times just WONT tear) also, i hate the way my squeegee glides across it.

like carrie says, everyone to their own. you may love it mate.. many do.

We started by using normal tape, but have also now got some clear stuff. We have done a couple of signs and 2 vans with the clear stuff and we prefer this to the normal stuff at the moment.

Doesn’t matter which one we use though…still cannot get rid of the bloody bubbles.

I use both paper and clear everyday. The clear is far less forgiving though. Also most clear app tapes do not like wet applications.

You want the textured one over the smooth one from my experience.

They usually sell polytape as the cheap clear. This is really thin, and has a static problem. The anti static version is a bit better, but in my experience, the polytape is the worst of all of them. Transferite clear is the best, and I think R Tape have one out now that is pretty good.

From NZ, log on to http://www.salautodesign.com as they sell Avery and 3M into NZ from Australia, as well as app tapes. The owner is Sharon, and she is really switched on. She originally had her own sign shop, then got in to distribution as she knows what the industry needs, 1st hand. She can answer any questions you may have as a supplier, and she does some really good deals too.

    Adrian,

Where do you get these fluids from? Can’t seem to find them.

    Cheers

i tend to use paper almost exclusively now, but keep some clear just in case. the biggest problem i found, was when you make up some graphics in advance, and then tape them, you have to be very careful not to stretch the clear tape as you apply it to the graphics, 2 days later you’ll see why as your nice flat sheet now resembles the hymalayas !

    Personally I hate the stuff!

I’ve got a roll for ‘special occasions’ – and I’ve barely touched it.

It’s just a pain to work with (won’t tear all the time, feels ‘wrong’, stretches inconsistently, not as hi-tack as paper can be) as I’ve been using paper tape for so long.

(Like I tell the missus) "A bargain is only a bargain if you’ll use it…"

ps. also getting a ‘failed PHP error’ hmmm.

I had a log of clear tape last month, from Grafityp, on special offer so it wasn’t much more than cheapy paper tape. With UKSB discount on top I couldn’t lose, and it is excellent! Static is a problem, – although not nearly as much as with a different make I got from Europoint- I am thinking of ordering another log cut to wider widths this time.
