  • How do you store your sheet materials?

Posted by Carrie Brown on July 26, 2005 at 12:09 pm

Im just wondering how everyone stores their boarding …… sheets of acrylic, correx, etc etc…… We have it stacked up against a wall at the moment and there is quite a bit of it …… not huge amounts but enough to look a bit messy and not the easiest of solutions when you need to get to the piece at the back 😕

Anyway to the point …… does anyone use or have they bought or made a storage system for their boarding? We want to build something to hold the sheets of material but before we put our plans into action would just like to know if anyone has piccies of something they use or do you all just stack it like we do at present??

Hope I’ve made a bit of sense here?

    😀

    Hi Carrie,

I have some racking fitted that the sheets lay flat on when they are sized between 1220 x 1220 & 1220 x 2440. I then have a upright rack for the smaller offcuts so that your not having to lift all the small bits out of the way to get to the bigger sheets. This is made up out of ply and looks like this
    I I I I I I.
The problem I see with stacking it upright against a wall is that the sheets can only be used for a curved sign if stored for a long time.

This is a big problem for me too, the piece of board you want is always
at the back of the pile against the wall.
I am just in the motions of making a racking system in a corner of the
workshop, using 3×2 timber fixed from floor to ceiling, making a
framework every 200mm and covering with ply to make it solid.
Can’t wait to get it done, it looks such a mess at the moment and as
Dave says after a while the board curves and is wasted.

Mine is stacked against the wall all over the shop, it looks a mess. I would be curious to see how everyone else’s shop looks compared to mine. I feel like such a slob because I have so little space to work in and everything is just a clutter. Sometimes so bad that it is embarassing when a customer walks in.

I am not a very organized person to begin with, and the shop I am in is like 100 years old and the roof is caving in in our garage, so no plywood out there! I have seen racks you can buy that hold sheets upright with dividers, but you can probably make your own for a lot cheaper.

Don’t worry Carrie, we need a rack as well. Anyone have pictures of their racks, ladies included (do you call them “racks” out there?) 😀

i made one out of steel, really does its job but still looks ugly. i put it together pretty fast after one of our guys “nearly” had an accident. he wasnt hurt but could have been. so i built one a day or so later. just getting round to building the one i intended now… few years later 😳 :lol1:

    good question carrie 😛

i also use daves idea of keeping sheets tidy….well i try too the small bits still look untidy (ed’s fault)…i hate it all lying around, and even trying to lay it flat on shelves is worse…you can never find the bit you want and end up taking all the pieces out…back to square one 😮

looking forward to seeing if someone has a good looking solution 😀

I thinks most Brits will know what you’re talking about Marek! 😉

Not sure those sorts of pics will get past the mods though! (Well not the female ones at least 🙂 )

Thanks for the replies so far everyone 😀

Its finding a good storage system for it all isnt it 😕 something thats practical and kind of looks neater than having it all stacked up.

Ok I might be being dim here but honestly I dont know what racks refer to? Racks to me is a storage solution??? But I take it you are on about something else Marek?

I asked Steve and he thinks it means b00bs and I thought perhaps pants/knickers :lol1: So what is it then???
