How do you stop roller banners curling?

It’s not as if we’re using cheap materials. We use a xerox 170 stoplite and a drytac laminate. It’s not all the time, but we are getting some curling on the edge of the banner when it’s pulled up.

Any tips on how to avoid curling edges?

    Thanks.

What printer do you use? Is it really necessary to laminate?

    Try the following options:

    a) Dont Laminate
    b) Use different laminate
    c) Buy different media.

I use a "Non-curl scrimless" PVC with excellent results on my Roland Printers, with no laminate.

The material looks like a thin roll of matt plastic. Print quality is superb, and I do not laminate the banners at all.

Gert what is this material ? We use Hydrosol Matt as the gloss takes forever to dry but still use laminate.

Try Ferrari Stamoid roll-up banner material from Hexis. Works great for us. Block out material, no edge curling, laminating not required.

    Martin,

The material I use is "Hex-Flex Scrimless Anti-Curl PVC" – They have various products in the range, incl. White with Grey blockout 500gsm, White Black White Double Side Printable 510gsm, and Scrimless Backlit Film 480gsm.

My supplier stocks 914, 1370, 1830, and 2200mm wide rolls.

I use the 480gsm product. Discovered it "by accident" – I wanted to use it with an aluminium tensioning system in my lightboxes, but it does not stretch enough. It actually buckled my aluminium lightbox extrusions. So I started using it for rollups, with great results.

I print on SP 540 and RS 640 Roland printers, Versa Works 3.21 The "SPVC : PVC Banner profile works a treat on this.

    Price is N$ 1575.00 for a 1370 x 50m roll. About GBP 110.00

Thanks guys…..But I can’t imagine anything being scratch proof when rolling up etc without lamination.

    Martin,

I think the fact that this material has a matt finish helps a lot with preventing scratches etc.

The ink is protected in the "recesses" of the media, meaning the bulk of it is not actually exposed to mechanical abrasion.

I also see this when printing on matt clear vinyl. I can applicate the vinyl straight off the printer without getting those fine scratches on it at all.

Dont take my word for it. Get some samples and see for yourself….
