  • How do you price your jobs?

Posted by Jamie Hunt on December 20, 2017 at 1:46 pm

Ive been using Estimate pricing system for quite a few years now , and i’m finding the multiple items inconsistent on pricing
to get a decent price i have to put in 3-4 items to get the right pricing structure,
I wanted to know what others charge for an 8′ x 2′ Sign (2440 x 610) with an aluminium frame for example and what you’d charge on qty say 5-10 signs
i mainly use Estimate as a CRM as well although its very basic its called http://www.estimatesoftware.com

We use clarity to estimate our jobs, we have to trick it sometimes. We’ve a default margin, but increase or decrease it depending on the job or customer.

I would make sure that the cost prices are correct, and if it estimates times make sure they’re accurate. Provided your costs are accurate, you can decide what to charge depending on the customer.

There might be a setting somewhere you’ve overlooked, when we quote magnetic signs, it tends to include the remainder of the roll of mag sheet as waste which gives you stupid prices, unchecking a tick box and we’re back in the real world.

Ive got my own spreadsheet with all the materials, my fitting time, designing time, manufacturing time. Work out how long each part will take and the quantity of materials and punch the numbers in. If the customers a nightmare then add a little more.

As my ex boss used to say, think of a figure and double it!

There’s a great read called "How To Price Signs Right" which talks about the fundamentals of Annual Overhead, Annual Billable Hours and Profit:

    I found a copy here for immediate reading: http://signquotesa.co.za/Calculate%20Si … rectly.pdf

If it’s not something you have ever considered, your hourly billable rate (charged to customers) needs to cover your overheads AND include your profit.

It’s a simple concept that can be figured out using a few basic calculations. Bit of an eye-opener, but will get you thinking about billable hours and not just billable items.

i found clarity far to in depth and not for me. I got a friend to set up a spread sheet for me with all my products and haourly rates and use it as my go to for billing. Its very useful when customer is with me to fill in all the boxes and a price comes out. It kind of gives me justifiction for the job.

I have a video tutorial with them on the 4th Jean to see if its going to be something that works for me but im worried if its to involved as i used to have Sage CRM for my database and feel i spent more time in the office filling out data than i was doing the job, im currently using Estimate software which is quite good but a little out on pricing qty, would you like to share your blank document of your pricing template so i can see how it works or is that not allowed on this page?

    Hi James

Yes, I did see it had changed its name to ShopVox, my main issue is knowing what to charge, which is what I need to work on combined with some good estimating software, that is either cloud or will work on a mac.
