  • How do you guys heat your workshops? Advice please?

    Hi,

We’re moving to a new industrial unit and are currently looking at installing a new heating system. The main workshop area is around 2000 SQFT with the ceiling at about 8 meters at it’s highest point. There is another area with separate heating for office staff so it’s just the main area we need to consider.

We’re trying to chose between radiant heaters and a warm air system. As I understand it the radiant heaters are more economical to run but they’re also quite a bit more expensive to install. Also the radiant option will mean no air / dust is being blow around the place. The warm air system is about half the cost to install of the radiant system so quite a big initial saving but we’re a bit scared of getting crippled by the gas bill.

What do you guys use? Does anyone have any advice?

    Thanks.

Our print room is 2000 sqf and we use warm air gas fired heating it cost around £5 a day to run in the colder months we have the night temp set slightly lower than the day temp so there is not too much change in temp so we don’t get trouble with medias curling etc.

We don’t pay any standing charge so in the summer it’s not costing us anything but we use the fans only in the heater to help cool.

An extra benifit is laying urgent prints on a bench in front of the heater the air movement combined with the heat cures the prints quicker.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Lee,

Thanks for the reply, very helpful.

£5 a day sounds almost reasonable. Is that £5 per 24 hour then (With it running at the lower temp at night)?

How high is your ceiling? Is the roof reasonably well insulated?

    Thanks.

    Hi Jonathan

The roof is well insulated but the wall are not the roof height is about 8m. You could have ducting to heat your office area also. We got our combat heatet on fleabay it was installed in a showroom then they decided to put a false ceiling in so it was as new condition.

jonathan we had a gas blower in our works, make sure you get someone to check out the correct size you need, ours was the wrong size, to small, it was on all the time and cost us a fortune, we are now getting a boiler installed with radiators.

Sounds like a similar unit to ours. So that’s £5 per 24 hours?

Do you mind me asking who your gas supplier is?

    Thanks.

That’s the radiant model we were looking at.

How many kilowatts are they and how much are they going for?

Are you still running the other 4?

    Any idea on running costs?

Installed a clean burn used fuel burner (thermobile) in autumn last year. It runs off any used oil or a diesel mix.
Not had to pay for any old oil yet so been completely free to run and sometimes it’s that hot we’ve had to open a door!!

Our current gas supplier is CNG no standing charge not too sure on the rate but it was the best deal we could get at the time.

    Hi Ian

I’m interested to hear about these as I’m about to turn my workshop into a "proper" dedicated vehicle fitting bay and need to sort heating out for it as it has none and is very cold.

Let me know as I can’t figure out how to PM yet on this new site 😉

    cheers

    Warren
