    Hey guys,

I’ve always wanted to know how do you painters paint those large signs you see on mega warehouses?

I’ve always been intrigued by how you get a stencil up there because they always look perfect.

some i know do it manually… which i imagine takes a long time and re3quires allot of skill. i also know some use a projector to get the outline/scale correct. i imagine there are various other methods too…

    Hi Guys,
I still do alot of this type of work in the west of ireland, I use the old fashioned grid method, prep you drawing in outlne format with a suitable grid and print, grid the side of your building in your chosen scale, draw in your bits with chalk, get the brushes out!! its actually very therapeutic compared to some of the more modern stuff – you dont have to be that accurate with your drawing as the brush will give you a better feel for curves etc.
    cheers

    Cheers guys,

I’ve seen the projector method but on a smaller scale. Some of the things I’ve seen would have required a bucket load of paint.

The grid method seems about right. Not something I’d want to get into. Straight lines etc would be so bad but anything with curves would kill me hehe.

    Cheers guys.

Same as Mike, I use grids, and if the building and its forecourt allow it you can mark out on the ground and transfer the measurements up onto the wall. There is a famous picture of Brendan Behan and his father (who was a painter/signwriter) doing it that way. Will try and locate it, I agree Mike, its one of the most therapeutic things in sign writing to work on that scale. Very rare nowadays though! 🙁
