  • How do I work out ‘Candelas’

    Hi

County Council now want me to more accurately tell them of a proposed signs luminance, 850 candelas/meter square no longer works with every illuminated facia box.

Thing is I have receieved notice of 820 candelas per square meter from manufacturer for 5mm opal acrylic… fine….. but I am proposing to use blackout vinyl to at least 3/4 of the sign…… so does that mean I can safely quarter ( it seems a proportional relationship) the output and send that to the council or what is the sense of sending them the higher output if that is not what is going to be up there….

    Hope that makes sense.

to my understanding the 820 per m2 will stay the same. its just that you will have less square meterage of it showing. The areas that are lit will still be 820 over the given distance of a square meter. However it does sound like that the supplier may have plucked the number from thin air as its quite convenient that it is just under the max allowed.
Someone please correct me if i am wrong

Ah, I see what you mean Kevin, thanks, of course you are right on that part…

Yes will still be 820 candelas/sqm but 1 meter squared showing as emitting light and not 4 meter squared… that’s the bit I don’t get about the council requirements, they just want size of sign and it seems potential output not the actual output in situ with lighting effectively 3/4 blacked out.

give them the size of the sign and break it down into illuminated & non-illuminated. That way it should not be rejected on too large an illuminated area.

Very good idea Kev… especially, and I kid you not, the shop is directly joined onto the main county council offices.. :lol1:
