  • how do i send an image to cutter?

Posted by DavidGSmith on March 15, 2012 at 12:48 pm

I have a jpg or bitmap of an outline which i wish to send to my cutter, but it doesn’t appear on the output screen. Do I need to trace it somehow or is there an easier way around it?
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks

Jpeg or bitmap images are made up of pixels (dots) so you can’t cut them using a plotter, only option is to print them.

Artwork for plotters has to be in what is known as Vector format where the image is made up of lines & curves.

If you have artwork which is in jpeg or bitmap format them it must be converted to a vector image so the plotter can cut it.

Depending on what software you are using this can be done by tracing/vectorising it or just dedrawing it yourself using the editing tools.

Yes, you need to trace it or draw it and save as an .eps or .ai. Your cutter won’t cut a jpeg or bitmap.

Yes you will need to convert it to a vector format by manual tracing if it’s fairly simple, or use Corel Trace [Bitmaps/Corel Trace].

Thanks for all your advice, phew!! So is Corel Trace easy to use? I am a novice after all ! 😀

Best way to get wet is to jump right in 🙂

Here’s an online tutorial to get you started.

it’s easy to use – like driving a car is easy, it just takes practice.

to be honest, trace often makes more work than it cures, only very clean solid shapes are picked out nicely by trace programs, you really need to learn to draw by using the drawing and editing tools. it’s a case of practice practice… lots of tutorials on here and the web,

best thing you can do is just take a photo and ‘lock object’, then use the tools to draw straight lines which then join up, then edit the lines to curves etc. it’s not a fast learning process to be honest.
