how do i put a background colour onto forex top?
Posted by John Singh on January 31, 2003 at 4:32 pmAnyone had the problem of giving Forex Top a background colour without using vinyl?
Is this possible without spraying?
Any problems using a mohair roller and something like dulux weathershield system.
Cheers

Thanks Peter:
Useful information. Its seems like the paint’s holding well. Thanks for the visual.
Its just that I’ve got to use gold leaf on the lettering over a quite a large area. So I wouldn’t want the background paint to peel off or crack.
The forex top has a brilliant gloss finish but I wonder if it might be best to rub it down with a fine 400 or something to provide a key and then undercoat it??? 😕 😕
Cheers!

If you’re going to paint the forex anyway, why use forex top? Why not use ordinary forex which is cheaper and already flat instead of glossy, so should accept paint better.
Alternatively, why not just cover the board with vinyl to colour it? I do this with a lot of my signs. The end result is a surface that looks painted but is achieved quickly.
Having said all that – perhaps you have a good reason to wish to paint forex ultra, and maybe I am missing the point here?

Thanks Phill
Sorry!
Should have explained the customer wants a certain colour ( a kind of terracotta- burgundy) to match their catalogue. As you know you can’t always get the colour you want with vinyl. The thought passed my mind that I could initially cover the forex in vinyl and then paint the vinyl!!!
The long way round??? 😕

Hi
How about painting with screen printers inks they seem to bite Into the survace a bit
but youll have to do a bit of homework on which one. -
Thanks Bob
Not used screen inks before. Is it the same consistency as paint? Can it be applied by brush or roller??
Cheers

Mind you there is no way of telling if it has really done anything at all!I bought it in a B&Q for about £10 a litre and I reckon will stil have some left when I retire, I am 32!

John, like Phill I cant understand why you want to use a gloss board, matt foamex is cheaper, and although I always give it a quick sand with a fine paper you probably dont have to.
