  • How do I make a sign tray with backlit protruding letters

Posted by Ruairi O'Boyle on July 5, 2010 at 9:19 am

I have an customer looking a sign box made from composite panel with opal letters protruding through faced off in vinyl thus giving an edge lit type ook to the name on the sign.

I was wondering how this is done? I suspect that the 3mm composite panels are routered and the the opal letters (5mm? too little?) are made with a recessed edge and glued into position. Is this correct?

Has anyone any good advise for this type of thing?

I could probably post a picture but I am not sure I am allowed in this forum.
Below is a link which might help under stand the type of thing I am trying to achieve.

    Ruairi,

Have fitted a couple but I’m no expert on these but I would say Fret cut tray with flat cut acrylic letters pushed through and glued to the back of letter and tray with clear acrylic tabs using a clear glue. 5mm will only give you a 2mm edge so 8mm would be preferable.

Some good companies out there that will make it for you.

Cheers Martin – your right 8mm would be a minimum actually!

I might give some of the suppliers a call on this one.

    Ruairi,

I would recommend Applelec or GDI both very good and helpfull.

You’ll find their details in the tool bar

    i reckon its
-opal panel with no cutting – ‘diffuser’

-fit opaque vinyl onto it with lettering cut out
bond clear cut 10mm letters acrylic to acrylic laminate tensol
    -same drawing/file
easy layout – just drop them in

    face the letters

otherwise you haven’t got a light source into the clear letter, so to refract out of the sides
-i remember doing some glass table tops with yellow light – twas years ago though
