  • how do i increase the halo lighting to appear brighter?

Posted by Carrie Brown on February 1, 2006 at 11:12 am

We have done a job with polished s/steel letters with white LED halo illumination, fitted on a dark blue fascia. The client is happy but has asked us is there anything we can do to tweak the sign to make the halo appear bigger?

We are thinking of perhaps raising the letters slightly by another 5mm from the fascia to increase the light spread (technial words I know :lol1: ) do you think this is a good idea, will it make much of a difference or does anyone have any other solutions we could try?

    Thanks 😀

Carrie, I am just about to do the same on some brushed stainless letters. I am going to paint the inside of the letters white to get more light reflection ( as well as replacing the facia with a lighter colour)

    Cheers

are you using leds from ashby carrie? if so, it is possible to gently push each led at an angle pointing more towards the edge of the letters outer area. if risen another 5mm it will be better again. “in theory”
the reason its good for this with the ashby ones is they are like little torches, its a little beam that spreads the further it gets. the led sits on a little bit of wire so you can direct which way it points.

the problem is the dark fascia, it saps all the glow from the leds. i did a brown fascia about 6 months ago with white leds and the glow is crap.
using the same leds on about 5 other signs, the glow is amazing and looks great!

As Dave suggested, paint the insides white, and also if the client will permit it, used a light colour vinyl cut the same size as the letters (or smaller) applied to the facia to reflect the light but not detract from the overall effect. I had to do that with one job, opaque gold letters (black returns) on a black background, and a white neon halo. Put white vinyl behind the letters as there was only a 1/2″ gap so not really noticable under unlit conditions. It made a bit of difference….and no, not my design!

that is another option option to help enhance the glow. it does work…
but like you said, depending on the space from fascia and letter you see the vinyl. i have seen a few signs done like this, but I’m not fussed on it. ide rather do without. at the end of the day if the glow is really needed its maybe better off getting the illumination done in neon.

    Thanks peeps!!

Unfortunately we cant coat the inside of the letters white as the LEDS are nice and snuggly fitted already, so it needs to be something we can do relatively quickly on site. The dark fascia has to stay as that is their choice and their corporate colours. It looks ok and the customer is happy but ideally if its possible they want a larger halo and for the halo to be seen from quite a distance.

Thanks Rob, yes they are Ashby LEDS, we will try moving them to the edge at an angle aswell as raising the letter a bit more. Hopefully this will give the “tweak” they would like?

I would post a piccie up but the centre does not allow their clients to take photos without written consent …. I expect they charge you for doing it too 🙄 shocking!!! Couldnt even get a sneaky pic done as the very official not willing to budge an inch security guard who over watched the fit would not allow it :lol1:

    Hi Carrie
I think you’ll find if you move the letters further from the fascia the halo will be weaker but your right it will be larger but not brighter, Led’s are superb for putting into smaller letters with a small return, like I said in my previous post about cold cathode if cold cathode is manufactured and installed correctly it puts Led’s to shame, unfortunately it’s the in thing at the moment

We have told the client that the halo will get slightly wider but at the same time weaker …. I think we will raise a couple of letters further away from the fascia so they can see and make the descision for themselves. They are a great customer so we dont mind putting the extra effort in.

We may mention neon to them again … especially for any future shops they open, it was mentioned the first time but wasnt what they wanted after seeing other fascias with leds.

I shall let you all know how it goes.
