  • How do I hang a sign from a RSJ??

Posted by John Ashbee on April 23, 2005 at 3:54 pm

    Hi,
I have a couple of illumanated sign boxes I need to hang on chains from an RSJ.
I was hoping to simply loop the chains over the top of the beam but have now realised that there are pipes etc I will foul.
I had a good look around in the building and noticed there are some pipe fittings mounted along the RSJ’s which look like a small G clamp, tightened up on the bottom edge of the beam with a small (M8?) bolt.
The Unistrut, studding or conduit is then screwed/bolted to the fitting.
The question is…..does anyone know where I can get these fittings from and want they’re called??
    Thanks in advance…
    John 😀

    Hi John

You can buy a hinged clip that has a 90% washer attached at one end, you can fix this to the RSJ with a hilti gun just ask at your local hire shop make sure to ask for the right nails and firing caps for steel, fire in your clips to the under side of the RSJ then just hook your chains in the clips.

    Good luck Russ

I hadn’t thought of using a Hilti gun, and we do have one @ work.
The only problem is that although I do have a Hilti ticket somewhere they do scare me. Its the way you only get one bite at the cherry….

Find a piece of scrap RSJ and fire a few practice shots, you can always rig it up on some blocks etc and practice from firing below, by the time you get to the job you’ll be flying to go.

    Good luck Russ

I was under the impression that hilti guns are no longer legal in the uk cos its classed as a firearm,.
Anyway its still overkill! just drill a hole in the rsj and use nuts and bolts, or self taps or even cable ties.

Hi John, I would try an electrical supplier where you might get clamps that hammer fit on to the edges, otherwise a piece of unistrut clamped at both sides if it’s a heavy sign. I’m not an expert on unistrut but an elec. supplier should put you right.

    Cheers

Yes, I had looked at the clips that push (hammer) onto the edge of an RSJ but they looked a bit lightweight, thats why the G clamp design caught my eye… 😮

I buy my Unistrut from a local hardware supplier and I tend to keep it in stock. Unistrut make brackets that fit to RSJs and fixings for accesories. My supplier also sells the G clamp type brackets you mentioned. These screw clamp to the edge of the RSJ and accept an M8 threaded rod. These are ok for lighter fixings but may twist depending on the load. I personally would do the full unistrut method. If you need any help or advise give me a shout.

Thanks for all the help here…
I’ve managed to solve the problem and get the sign up, looking good.
I contacted unistrut to find my local supplier, who told me to go to my local City Electrical Factors. However, CEF only stock 3m lenghts of channel and the Zebbs (is that the right name for the spring loaded nuts??).
Back to unistrut who told me of a stockist about 20 miles away who had everything.
I got the RSJ clamps @ £5 each (x2) and bolted a right angle plate onto them. Hooked a ‘S’ hook through the hole then hung chain down from that. It all worked very well and most importantly it won’t fall down in a hurry…
I also picked up a Unistrut catalogue while I was there so next time I’ll know what I’m talking about..

Glad to hear it went well, John.

We’ve used Unistrut to hang Televisions, Projectors, Lightboxes etc. and it really is adaptable. A mate of mine even built a carport from it!!!

If you’ve got any pictures of the finished job it might help others understand what we’ve been talking about.

    All the best
