  • how do i go about making a brochure in corel12 please?

    hi all,

recently it came to light that the reason i was unable to move something on my corel desktop, was because it was on another layer (ie layer 2).

    now, bare with me…

this got me thinking, i was asked recently by a very big company for a couple of quotes, and to also send them a brochure / details of my business, well, i decided to make a proper job of it, despite this company (national) being on 90 day terms, they use an awful lot of ‘smaller’ signage throughout their 20 uk sites. this could be the making of me, so..

i’ve been out and bought a decent comb binder machine, a new A4 laminator, and lots of posh paper to play with. with the intention of making the booklet, showing the kind of work i can do, and a few select jobs / photographs included.

    back to corel…

rather than make each page in a seperate file, is there any feature in corel, which allows me to work on one page at a time (single sided) but in the same file. ie, not have 20 windows open at once!

if so, how do i go about it please?

    Hugh

    Hi hugh
Not sure if this is what you mean but if you look at the bottom left of the page … just to the left of where it says page 1 there is the option to add pages.

    Hope that this helps

    Yes.

    Under ‘Layout’ select ‘Insert Page’.

Or, on the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen click the + sign to add a page.

Be careful not to have any items off the page though as this can cause weird things to happen sometimes. Like it will copy it to all pages.

If you select ‘resize current page only’ in page layout this wont happen!
The esteemed Mr Elsmore telled me that! 😀

Layers is normally the best way to do muliple layered jobs, you can do it on pages so you can view them all if zoomed out but with layers you can number or name them for each brochure page and then click on the one you are working with and click off to change to the next page.

A small brochure will be no problem with V12, add your pages using the + key or insert page, page sorter view will enable you to reorder pages by dragging. You can also view facing pages (set up in page setup), from print preview you can do your imposition and there are scripts for page numbering. I would avoid having images spreading over 2 pages as this can be awkward unless you are manually setting up your imposition. Paragraph text is better for large lumps of text and you do have a text wrap function for bitmaps, use powerclip to alter shapes of bitmaps and get rid of backgrounds. Save regularly. Layers you set will be available on each page (only X4 has different layers for each page) but a layer can be a master layer, any object put on the master layer will appear on each page so if you change it you will change all pages, layers can be set to non printing, locked, viewable or have an overide colour on them.

dead easy mate, the bottom left hand corner just hit the + tab/symbol to add another page, set up your template for each page and just cut and past it into each page, I did my brochure like that and saved it as a PDF. It aint amazing but has had some good responses.

    cheers

Oh i won’t do that!! but it’s certainly worth doing, my website, for various reasons, is well out of date now, so i’m avoiding sending people there at the mo, by doing a nice, full colour brochure, properly put together, i can maximise my chances on grabbing a customer, and customise various aspects of it to work that i know they’re interested in !

    cheers.

Personally Hugh I think a good web site is worth a ton of brochures.

    Surely more a priority?

    yup,

when i can get ahold of the girl who did the site. she moved away, and i’ve only just managed to get her number again. my bandwidth is being exceeded within about 10 days of each new month now, which means the site is often down, it has needed upping for about 6 months now.

since i can’t add anything to it at the mo, a brochure, which they can read at their leisure, along with samples of substrate etc, is the way forward. i can tailor it to what i know they’re looking for, rather than have them trawl 100+ images of stuff which might have no bearing on what they require of me!

have a look at these people as regards printing it Hugh

    http://www.walshcolourprint.com

I set up a trade account with them after getting a recommendation on here. Great service all over Europe.
I got 1500 16 page full colour gloss A5 brochures for around 500 euros all done and dusted within a week!. Brilliant prices for quality business cards too.

    Hi Harry,

thanks for that, i’ll keep it in mind. what i really want to do here is short run stuff, if people are happy to pay the hourly rate, i’m happy to knock em up,

    eg….
i’ve just been asked to knock up ten 15 page 25th anniversary brochure / price lists for a pals timber yard, 3 for reception, 2 for the office, and some spares for big contract customers. they’ve got all the old / new photo’s and text, i just need to whaz it into corel and make it look good, couple of hours perhaps, plus an hr to laminate, punch and bind them. told em about £8-10 each, and they’re happy with that. they can get em at £3 each for 100, but don’t want a hundred of em when their prices change every few months, and they don’t leave the yard!

i’ve already done a few short runs of laminated busi cards, it might cost em £30 for 100 cards (an hour + a few quid max of materials/toner), but it fills what might be an empty hour!

obviously if i’m too busy, it’ll be reconsidered, but for now, there’s plenty of free time, and a mortgage to be paid!
