  • how do i go about learning corel draw from the begining?

Posted by Frank_Galloway on September 4, 2007 at 9:23 am

    morning,

I know, but i have to start somewhere.. so was wondering in your opinion (those who have been there and done it and can advise what’s best) what is the best way to learn this application from scratch ?

I’ve got a few websites saved with general advice and a few free "tutorial videos" – but obviously being free they are not the best / limited in what they cover.

Now i have found a Tutorial CD for sale – not sure if I’m allowed to mention names on here but they are based in Oz.

the guy has been very helpful over email and obviously the AUD/GBP rate is appealing at the mo – so it would work out about £40 for 12 hours of DVD quality one on one training / tutorials.

anyone any views on these / how did you learn from scratch ?

    thanks very much,
    Frank.

Reading the manual is a lot cheaper! My method has always been to just put something on screen and then see what all the various tools do to it. Check the manual when you get really stuck or ask on here.

Like Andy, when I was starting (with Illustrator) I just kept the book handy and, when I got stuck, referred to that.

In fact, I’m still doing it every now and again when I want to do something I’ve not done before.

I actually prefer books to on-screen stuff.

Having said that, £40 is not a lot of money and you only need to pick up a couple of tips or tricks to make it worthwhile.

I prefer the try it & find out method too….I always find I get a bit bogged down with tutorials or manuals.

I’ve found that with Corel it is basically a… what you see, you get kind of programme…..by that I mean the tool does what it’s says it’s going to do….there are no hidden nasty’s like with photoshop or the like.

I know it’s each to their own but I think Corel Draw is one of the most user friendly design packages there is.

I would just practice & you may be surprised how quickly & easily you pick it up

I agree just buy the corel draw "official guide" you can pick up version 12 manuals on amazon and play.com etc for not a lot, also type in corel draw into youtube and there are some cracking demo’s etc. Def buy a manual tho, I was self taught and am pretty of with it all now but I know I haven’t touched the surface of what the package can do. I used the trace facility in X3 last night as was really struggling and was amazed at the vector it produced for me which was perfectly usable, saved me a lot of hassle!!

I have the manuals – as i bought a ligit boxed version for full money (x3 graphics suite)

I’m more of a learn by being show than reading a book so just thought I’d ask how others have found it best to learn in their experiences…

finding out for yourself is one thing but I really don’t want to be clogging up the forum on here with my numpty q’s every 5 mins – i find i learn more and far quicker by being shown, than struggling through and stumbling across methods / techiniques sort of hap hazardly…

I may stump up the £40 odd, as it looks like a very thorough training DVD.

(only downfall is it has an Auzzie accent teaching you :lol1: )

I bought the DVD package from http://www.advancedartist.com , 11 hours plus very help full guy , the free tutorials on his site are good. 79 dollars deliverd. Have not gotten through everything as I always fall asleep !

I am looking for some good dvds or books regarding layouts and colour schemes if there is any on the web?

as Tim said, I have to agree.
We ordered the DVD from http://www.advancedartist.com so I hope it’s as good as the other tutorials. The tutorials show real life scenarios with mistakes and all, there always new way to do things sometimes better and quicker.

Thought I’d better post up my findings seeing as i shelled out 97 AUD for the Click n Learn tutorial..

.. all i can say is .. ITS GREAT ! – I’ve been working along with it (it’s not just a boring video – you get projects to work along with – 1 on 1 tutoring just like an in house course really.. except you can stop the tutor and rewind him at your will :lol1:

Was a bit put off by the Auzzie’s accent at first but now it’s all cool with me…

cannot recommend this highly enough – for less than £40 you get instant access online and the CD’s are posted to you should you want to use them instead of the online access.

I’ll be getting their Corel Paint lessons next (when released) – don;t actually need it but i’ve discovered i actually like learning new things again !
    its so refreshing !

    😀

not sure the mods allow but it’s http://www.clicknlearn.com

if you look at the right hand side of the front page i went for the Workplace Ready courses (1&2) + More @ 97 AUD… remember all the prices are in AUD not USD 😉

you can also sign up for instant download of the trial lessons.. and you;ll see what i mean about his accent – but like i say i hated it at first but he’s fine now :lol1:

hope that helps.. all info is on that site and he replies to emails v quick too..

    cheers
    Frank.

just like to add – it’s 97 AUD because they add on postage to the advertised 89 AUD price for the actual discs….

    hope that makes sense

I bought the course after reading about it on here and I have to say I am finding it very good. I have completed the basic module and am just starting on the advanced module.

Corel, from novice to at least having some sort of idea in 3 days (hot)

    Kind Regards

Have you purchased other stuff from another country and not paid postage? I find that an unusual statement.

    Graham

PS Please read the above with an Aussie accent. Ha Ha

Is your accent a bit like Smiffy on the Bill

I find Youtube a great resource for free training videos on a variety of subjects, including CorelDRAW.
