  • how do I get to cut the blue rectangle and the text out?

Posted by Russell Huffer on June 21, 2005 at 11:25 am

I have Flexisign and am trying to cut some banners that I designed in Illistrator. The problem I have is I am trying to cut text as what I belive is called reverse video ie you have a rectangular block in my case blue and the text is cut out so that the white banner matrial shows through.
Flexisign insists on seeing this as two colours blue and white and wants to cut a blue rectangle and white lettering, how do I get it to cut the blue rectangle and the text out of the blue.
Or can I cut stright form Illistrator and not use Fleisign, which is a program I am fast beginning to hate.

    Many thanks

    Russell.

I’m not a Flexi user but most of the apps work in a similar way, somewhere I suspect is a setting for cut by colour or separation, deselect this – or ensure that text is curves/paths/outline or whatever the Flexi term is and then combine (not group) the wording shapes with you blue box, this should make the wording part transparent.

Of course it sees it as two colours, it IS two colours. You are cutting now not printing.

Theses are the fundamental differences in producing work in package like Illustrator, which is designed for print, and sign packages which are designed to cut.

make the text the same blue as the rectabgle, select both, and then compound it (ctrl-m) to ‘knock out’ the text.

    Voila.

Just ‘select all’ and set them to be the same colour – for the design you describe you don’t have to compound them at all if you are struggling with this option. Just cut it and then it’s then just down to how you weed it.

Realy getting nowhere fast today. What files can Flexisign read???
I use Illistrator and save as EPS SVG (all options tried) and Fleisisgn can not open the file.
I open the .eps that I have of the logo in Quark save as eps and Flexisign can read, problem with this method is Quark cannot edit placed eps files they just show up as a grey box and Flexisign displays the graphic but as one item that I can not seem to edit.
Me and Flexisign are not going to get along.
If someone would be so kind can they please tell me what file type Flexisign is able to read and how when created in Illistrator, or failing that can someone suggest a workable package that I can use with Roland PC600

    Many thanks

After many hours finally a resolve. The problem is that unlike Illistrator and Quark which will happyley work cross platform so long as fonts converted to curves. Flexisign just cannot understand Mac files and all my master artwork was original Mac, strange open it in Illistrator on PC and save as eps Fleisign can not read, do same but save on PC as .ai file first and Flexisign can read. I guess Flexisign should be called NotVery Flexisign.
It seems the file was being saved as Macintosh 8-bit color not Tiff 8-bit color.

    Thanks for peoples help

    Regards

    Hi Russell,
Flexi is a great program………..from Illustrator save your exported file as an ai file version 8 or below, then import into flexi as normal, you should have no problem. Flexi and Illustrator work very well together and I rarely have a problem. If you have Illustrator CS remember to export as a Illustrator Legacy file and then select which version of illustrator to export it as i.e. 10, 8 7 etc.
Alot depends on which version of Flexi you have,
Also as mentioned before, the way to cut Knock out panels is to compound the text and the box and the programme will see it as one object, or as suggested by another, simply colour the text and the box the same and cut.

    Jem,

Thanks for help, I have found that now saved as PC Illistrator, I am just saving as an .ai file and all seems to work, but I will start saving as legacy to hopefully minemise any problems I would otherwise have.

    Best regards

    Russell.

Flexisign is a great tool for Illustrator!

in my opinion if Flexisign could be made a standard plug in for basic cutting functions within illustrator life would be good…..

save ai files to be cut ai version 5……works fine!
