how do i get the kerning correct on layouts?
Posted by Angelique Muller on December 8, 2007 at 4:41 pmIs there a general rule as to how to get the spacing between the letters right? Or is it a case of having a good eye for this? 😮

no its not scary 😀 rounded letters ie: OO together space closer, as well as rounded next to straight….as long as you make sure the spacing is exactly the same between the other letters, and the setting on a line the rounder letters are set dropped lower than the line 😀 but im sure someone else will add something ive missed 😀

chrisor vino vision helps sometimes :lol1: :lol1:
on a serious note…if you have been used to laying out with letraset and signwriting it does train your eye, when using the pc…and the biggest mistake with that is the pc doesnt know how to do it….you have to tell it 😀

If you imagine that you were filling the gaps up with water..use the same amount of water between each letter
That way you will see the negative space between the letterTerry

Actually, Illustrator does a pretty good job with kerning if you set the kerning to Optical in the character window. Another good trick I have used is to look at your type upside down which makes spotting gaps easier http://blog.prepressology.com/typography-tip-1-kerning-upside-down/.
