Hi, I’m using Coreldraw and want to create some text with drop shadows in vinyl, I’ve read the recent thread about this but Coreldraw will not let me weld text, any idea what I’m doing wrong?:headbang2:
    Cheers Gordon

Run through the steps you are taking, not sure I understand what you mean.

Write text, copy it, lay one over the other to create drop shadow, this is as far as I get, I need to then weld/combine these two texts before laying the main text on top.
At least this is what I think I need to do.

To achieve a very basic drop shadow in Corel that can be cut in vinyl, set your text then dupe the text to the position you want it to create the drop shadow and change the colour of the dupe.
Adjust the offset until your happy then dupe the top text just above the shadow effect out of the way. Now make both blocks of text in the shadow effect the same colour. Now weld the shadow effect. You can now cut the block that you have just welded and the text that you duped out of the way will fit nicely on top of it. Walla, job done!
    Hope this helps

Thanks for your help, unfortunately, Corel won’t let me weld text, other shapes are fine, what I am trying to achieve is just cutting the part of the shadow that you see and avoid layering, I can do this with shapes using trim, but not text. I’m using Coreldraw10.

i found that site too… but how do you do a block shadow ? (3d type thing ??)

on that tutorial it just places 20 odd copies to give you the effect – but you can’t cut using that method i don;t think ??

watching this thread with interest 😎

edit – found this thread – gonna try the shadow walkthrough myself 😕

if i want a more 3d look to it,there are a few ways to do it,

make a dupli of you first text, add a small contour around it, break contour apart, and remove the original text, now duplie the contour shape, set together slightly offset, then select all (drag the pointer holding left click down across the objects) and click ‘weld’ in the top tool bar, then when you place the text on top again, it’ll give you a more 3d looking shadow, and a slight outline around your original text,

    like this https://www.uksignboards.com/download.php?id=15440

to make it look like it’s standing clear of the body work, do as above and make you dupli of the contour shape, click on the upper dupli, make sure the last copy is above as this wil be the top layer, select the top layer, click arrange>shaping>weld, then select both, and in the tool bar click the ‘crop’ tool, now remove the top layer, and you’ll have an outline of a shadow, replace the orignal text, leaving the space where the outline would be, and it gives the effect of the text ‘floating’ above the shadow.

a bit like this, although the gap twen the text and shadow is tine on this one !! https://www.uksignboards.com/download.php?id=11835

    hope that helps.

yep, ok, i hope you’re using coreldraw 12 ! it might be different in the others.

    ok.

select the text (don’t try and do too much at once unless you have 20gig of ram !), click contour, make sure the text is ‘real size’, select the amount of contour, 5 to 10mm is the norm on most of my work, make sure it’s set to outside, and only one step, click ok, and it will add the contour, then, before doing anything else, click ‘arrange’ on the top tool bar, in the drop down menu it will say "break contour group apart", or something similar, this will then allow you to move / select / colour the text / contour individually,

if you accidentally unselect the Contour group, you’ll need to re select them, ie drag your ponter across them until the whole of both text and contour are in the litle square you’ll make, then go back to arage.break contour apart.

check you messages at the top of the page too

a quick way to copy / paste, is to left click on the object you want to copy, drag it aay from the original and right click while continuing to hold down the left click, this will automatically copy to the new destination. 😉

you are right there are occasions when corel will not weld but i have just spent half a hour trying to duplicate the fault in v10 and its done it every time correctly.

some times groups will not weld until you ungroup them or seperate a contour.

Thanks to everyone for the help. Seems my main problem was not converting the text to artistic text (I’ve always used Drawplus before which is more user friendly, but nothing seems to accept it.)

    Cheers Gordon
P.S. Not related to Frank as far as I know 😀

Once you have finished editing the text and need to weld, convert to curves.
    then you can weld it.
