  • how do i convert Russian font characters in Signlab?

Posted by SteveGood on June 5, 2004 at 3:42 am

    Hi .
I’ve been given a MS Word document as a raw image for a series of signs for a customer. The problem is that some of the text is in Russian and I am unable to recreate this in Signlab ( v5 ) I have used the character map program within windows to enable me to use these characters within MS applications , but they still show up as ? when typed into Signlab.
Any help with this problem will be appreciated
Thanks in advance from a first time user

Can you get the file into Corel as text? if so export from there as AI or EPS converting text to curves, this will import into Signlab for cutting/printing. I use Corel as a bridge when confronted with outside files as it invariably handles them better than Signlab.

    Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately I don’t have Corel , but I do use Illustrator for similar purposes. However as the text is not recognised as anything other than a graphic already , I am limited to a very small character that when zoomed in on is pixelated.I need to be able to get any graphics program like illustrator to allow me to type the Russian text characters so that I can convert to vector outlines and export into signlab.
    Any ideas welcome

Dont know if this helps but i just learned this today myself.
Have your Windows CD handy cause youl need it.
Go to start/settings/control panel/regional settings and put a checkmark beside cyrillic but Dont click on Set default, just OK
Windows will reboot. ( i had to reboot twice)
When rebooted, go to start/settings/control panel/keyboards/Input locals and add the Russian keyboard, again Dont click on Set as default.
You should now have a new Icon on your Start bar that toggles between English and Russian

Start Signlab 5x.x , go to type in some text, go to the Font Icon, and you should now see some Russian TTfonts eg (Arial Narrow Cyrillic)
If you toggle the language icon on the start bar to russian and type in text, it will type russian charachters, toggle the icon to english (even in mid paragraph) and english charachters appear.

The only thing i dont know is how to get the correct Russian letter when pressing on an English key on the keyboard.

Thanks very much Frank , that sounds like the fix I’ve been looking for .
I’ll try it out as soon as I dig out my XP disc. I’ll post the results when I’ve done.
Thanks again for your help and expertise
