  • how do i change the co-ordinates in SignLab please?

Posted by Nehme N. on February 1, 2007 at 8:58 pm

I need to change the coordinates in SignLab. How does it work? This is the first time I’m here. Please be patient with me.

The problem is that I’m not able to cut a logo measuring 500 mm – 1000 mm.

Hi welcome to our world, if you introduce yourself, you may get a better response, Not sure what you mean about the co-ordinates either, can you give a few more details?

    Hi Nehme,

To allow people to help you, it may help to elaborate on the cutter that you are using, and to describe the material you are cutting, what its application will be, etc.

Without knowing further details, here are some tidbits that might help you:

    • Ruler unit of measure can be adjusted via Options >> SignLab Setup >> General Preferences >> Units.
    • Now, on the workspace, if you select an object, then its coordinates and measurements are shown in the SmartBar.
    • If you need to cut at specific coordinates, then you probably want to place a registration mark. You can read about this in the help file by going Help menu >> Index.

That should be enough to get you started. May I ask what version of SignLab you are using?

    Cheers,

    Rod at CADlink

I would start by working your way through the tutorials that you got when you bought the Signlab package, all the basics are covered and once you have completed them you should be able to find your way around without to much bother.

Rod, you are a very helpful representative of Cadlink – giving advice & technical support to many board users, new & old – all of which is valuable & appreciated.

(NOT singling out this thread in particular)
Maybe it’s just me, but helping people who may or may not have totally legitimate copies, eg. claimed ‘shareware’, ‘was on the PC’ or ‘fully working demos’ of the software that keeps us in business is VERY counter productive to both of our industries IMO…usually when it’s accompanied by…"I couldn’t get Signlab to work on my P-cut so I changed to FlexiSign. Is corel better ‘cos I have that too…"

The more free advice that get bandied about to users of ‘copies’ – the more WE have to pay for the next release to make up for the loss in revenue. Maybe a quick check of dongle number or something…no dongle=no advice.

It’s just a suggestion, and no intention to offend anyone in this thread…but I didn’t pay a LOT of money for my real software to see a representative of the company give any more advice than "contact the reseller / visit the website" to users of software without the full documentation, hardware security etc.

Not saying I do. But a simple question by Rod "what is your dongle number" when technical support is requested / offered from the CADlink REP may well help slow the growth of the cowboy, "I just got a plotter & some pirate software…now gimme some help" brigade.

Frankly I don’t care if anybody has illegal copies of software, CD’s, tapes, videos off the telly from last year…. But imagine, "Hi, I am having problems with a few DVDs I downloaded off Limewire of movies just out at the cinema, I am thinking about going into business hiring these out – can anybody help?", nobody in that industry would help / condone it…

If any members here use ‘less than legitimate software’ it’s THEIR perogative, I’m just saying WHY give a leg-up to people asking for advice to get their £10 Ebay CD working without maybe, just maybe seeing if it’s as good as nicked or not…

    Like I said

Now I am assuming that Nehme, a new member with their first post is genuinely asking for help. I’m sure they never intended to become embroiled in the midst of a slanging match.

Nehme, I think what you are asking is how do you rotate the graphic, to cut off the length of the roll, rather than tiling (cutting in 2 pieces?)

What version of Signlab are you using, as instructions vary slightly in different versions.

I hear you Dave, and it is a concern for us as well. Unfortunately, legitimate users can get tripped up as well, so providing a little orientation helps to soothe the learning anxiety. After a bit of back-and-forth, the nature of the poster becomes more apparent.

For a person that has inadvertently bought pirated software (the sites can appear quite legitimate), there is more value in convincing the person to purchase legitimate version that includes full support.

    Regards,

    Rod at CADlink

I realise that this is a serious issue which is why I said work through the tutorials but I think both Nicola & Lorraine made a very good point, we shouldn’t be using this thread to discuss the pirate versus original software. The poster asked for help and it is up to members to decide if they want to help or not.

We shouldn’t automatically assume that someone is using the wrong software even if it does appear that way. hopefully Robert will move some of these posts to a new or different thread.

    Sorry David,
There’s no need to sound off like that. If anyone on here is using dodgy software and I’m sure there are many, then yes you are right in saying they shouldn’t be entitled to free advice when they aint paid their dues. But this site contains all kinds of advice on software and machinery and many questions are asked everyday. This is what this site is all about.
I think you should retract or alter your post mate. Assuming this guy is using dodgyy software without proof and pasting on to these boards aint right. I wouldn’t be happy if this response came on any topic I put on here!

Am I missing something here ………………… where the hell does ‘pirate software’ come into this thread? This question here is pretty straight forward ……………….. no mention of ‘I bought it on Ebay or I bought it for £20 ‘
Whilst we all hear what you’re saying Dave, I think an apology to the Newbie who has just asked a simple question is in order ……………. he’s now probably too scared to make a bloody reply! 😮 You’ll have frightened him off! Now say hello nicely David!

Marcella, hopefully Robert will move most of these posts to somewhere else, in fairness to Dave he did say that he wasn’t having a go at the poster and said it was not his intention to offend anyone.

It doesn’t say anything about pirate software or I bought it on ebay you are right but asking how to resize a graphic is a bit of a strange question I would have thought. Nehme might have been scared off I would agree but at the same time may not have replied because they might get asked for registration info for their copy of signlab. If it were me and I had bought signlab I would have made another post to ensure people I had bought it.

fair enough Martin ………. but I still feel it was a tad unfair. Saying that this post wasn’t being singled out is a bit late in the day. I know if it were me I’d have felt it was aimed at me. I have asked many strange questions about Signlab (and I do have a dongle!) first time I looked at it I couldn’t make head nor tail of it (still can’t half the time)………….. I had parted with over £2k had a bundle of floppy discs (yes I’m THAT old 😀 ) an instruction manual and I was still stumped. I think giving the benefit of the doubt isn’t asking too much.

Anyway, it’s friday night and we should all be having fun! 😀
What are you drinking Martin, it’s my round? 😀

    Martin,
As I said this is a site where people ask for advice. This guy may have just started in this game and not have a clue. How many people have you heard about that start up in this game and don’t have a clue. There was no need at all to even raise the subject. This argument shouldn’t even be happening.

David you was a little naughty but like others I know where you are coming from, it hurts suppliers along with you sign boys n gals, if your kit is legit it means you have paid the going rate as compared to the 12 month cowboy round the corner.

Just one thing though……anyone got this font, vehicle outline……cough cough 😉

Marcella, I agree with you it was a bit unfair and I did say in a previous post that Dave shouldn’t have used this post to make his comments but I have a feeling I know why he did it>
This post came right after one from a guy who said his mate gave him a demo copy which was obviously a pirate, think Dave’s frustrations just got the better of him. Lets face it he is normally very helpful with his advice and I have learnt quite a bit as I am sure others have from his posts.
As for drinking I don’t drink at all Marcella. Mainly because I am not suppose to with the pain killers I have to take.

Karl, I agree 100% we shouldn’t be having this discussion on this post at all, as I said in an earlier post it is up to members who they help.

I have pondered this all day. David has a valid point, and I admit I had similar thoughts when I saw the question from a new member.
however I decided to ask for more info, and get an hello from nehme.

It would have been better for Dave to start a new topic, rather than voice his opinion tagged to the post from Nehme. perhaps in the uksg member area, away from public viewing

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree this was NOT the thread to open this debate on, for this I apologise to Nehme N. As I stated that in my opening post…it was NOT aimed at any poster in particular. If anyone, it was as respectfully as possible towards Rod Young making the simple suggestion that as OUR REP for this expensive software, maybe a cursory check of software legitimacy could be made before handing out advice & technical support…what Rod says we apparently pay for.

I am ALL FOR helping out newbies and regulars alike, and receiving help when needed and have made some friends & many acquaintances doing so. This is a rare quality that makes this group work.

To be honest, if my comments were out of line at ANY POINT I’m very sure our capable mods & administrators would a) have edited them, b) deleted them or c) PM’d me and I respect them for letting the discussion continue, though I think ALL of us in hindsight would have preferred a quick ‘move’ to a new location.

I was really interested in Rod’s reply and reasoning – and he made some valid points, not a great security measure protecting legitimate users investments – but broadly helpful and inviting to all users of the software. Just left me thinking "why then buy the real deal when you’ve just been told how to work the copy you have?" Martin & Peter made a good point – "not the place to discuss this" which is why I respectfully left it as it stood until (hopefully) the final post in this thread…to be moved or not.

I hope that all sides can see it was NOT having a pop at Nehme.

Something just ‘got my goat’ and brought to mind an instance that occurred a few weeks ago when a new poster came on with "a P-cut, ‘shareware’ signlab & flexi..because the signlab didn’t work…" and I hijacked this thread (in my haste). 😕

I really don’t want a slagging match or this to turn in any way shape or form ‘personal’..as Marcella said "It’s Friday night…" Can we PLEASE put this thread to rest, whether you agree with the point I raised or not.

    Dave
