  • How can i reduce static charge when printing?

Posted by Robert Lambie on May 6, 2006 at 6:20 pm

    hi folks…
have a bit of a niggling problem here.
i am printing roll-up banner stands. i am printing onto the kentmere type material, grey backed. the prints are coming out perfect but i am noticing, "what looks like" static charge ink blotches" very slight straggling whips of ink coming from heavy printed areas. i am pretty sure this is static becaue when i am unrolling the material at the back of the mcahine the static is making the hair on my arms charge up :lol1:
does anyone know a way to prevent this happening?

thanks in advance, ill keep checking back here as i print. 😀

As I’ve said before Rob – ditch the cheap nylon knickers and swap for rubber underwear! 😀

rob, when i used to remove the selathane from banner material rolls,I used to get charged up heavy, I hold the JV3 (metal area) is one hand and wind off the roll.

As the early JV3 has metal print bed, it is earthed so we dont suffer.

Kentmere is a pain, does work but doesn’t like heavy ink coverage particulrly with blacks, had make sure profile wasn’t putting too much ink down.

marcella, comando’s dont wear nylon or rubber 😉 :lol1:

thanks for the tip dave. its actually running spot on now.
it was the first rollup banner being printed that i had bother with.
as i said, whisps of ink coming away from the dark areas. what i did was to gentle wipe my hand over the material from the back as it was fed into the machine while printing. this basicaly stopped the whisps.

i started the second one printing and the phone rang… while on the phone i forgot to wipe it as it printed. i got up and to my surprise NO whisps… not one… i am now on popup 4 and its still running perfect. no whisps nothing!
my guess is it might have been because i had just opened a brand new roll and unwinding the beginning it caused allot of static. (thats my guess anyway) :lol1:

the material i am using isnt actually Kentmere, but wasnt sure how to explain it as its very new. i bought it from europoint display and it is basically the gloss version of Kentmere with the grey backing.

how about resting a thin ‘L’ shaped strip of dibond on the roll held to the floor by the foot of the ‘L’, maybe this will take the charge away, just guessing.

must remember to ask u when we get to the show.. like to see the results of that one.

For banner stands we just use a thin grade banner material.

    dave rowland…
these banner stands will be at the show mate, so you can see first hand the results. 😉

Hi Dave I assume you mean cellophane

If you are printing onto any substrates I suggest you use anti static fans or ionizers (as their real name) and keep an enclosed area for this operation

Had the same problem myself a few weeks back. I was approached by a company called Papergraphics who upon finding out I used Kentmere suggested I try there alternative, they told me it uses the same base as Kentmere but was cheaper.
I ordered a roll to try, unfortunately I had terrible problems with static both during printing, built up on print heads and spots on the paper and when cutting after printing, all the prints stuck together.
When I spoke to Papergraphics they suggested a device from RS would solve this issue, I guess this is the type of thing Adrian mentioned above.
My solution go back to Kentmere you get what you pay for, to be fair Kentmere give me discount and do not charge delivery on top, when I received invoice from Papergraphics the cost saving was just £10.00 per roll.
I ran 1 roll of Papergraphics through my printer and it took 2 days to get printer cleaned up and useable again, last week I ran 4 rolls of Kentmere with no problems what so ever.
Why use a product that has a problem you need to eliminate when you can use a product that does not have the problem in the first place.

    Regards

    Russell.

    quote Dave Rowland:

So what do you use as a "stop light" with that Dave.

For "budget" priced systems (like the easystands LPR) we use a total block banner, however, have found this to be too thick for some other systems.

Like Russell says, we’ve also used rolls and rolls of Kentmere and never had a static problem.

    Thought I’d res-erect this one…..

We are just looking at switching over from the Kentmere Opaljet 125 to the Europoint product, printed 6 off and went to laminate today, noticed the static given off when laminating was picking up all sorts of cr@p.

Is this an issue with this product? has anyone else experienced this problem? how can I reduce static at the laminator? seams a bit of a coincidence that Rob had static problems printing it, and we have static problems laminating it!

    Chris.

we had exactly same problems. i posted our solution here. https://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=21562 how ever we managed to get our hands on some other roll up material v. cheap as well which stopped the problem without the humidifier. Hexis also do a ferrari stamiod pvc banner which is great for rollups.
