In X3 it is character spacing, you will find it in paragraph formatting in the text menu.
In earlier versions I think you use kerning, somewhere in the text menu.

You’ll never get an even space between letters. Or at least you shouldn’t. Properly kerned text will have varying gaps depending on the particular letter.

I’ve only been doing Corel for two years, all self taught (with help from Stevo) and fighting it the whole time.
But because I am first an foremost a sign painter I agree with Andy.
    I kern (space) by "eye"
Type your text. Break apart. Select a letter using the mouse. Holding down the CTRL key with one finger (so the letter stays on the same line as the others) use your mouse to drag it to where it looks best.
To select more than one letter hold down your "Shift" key.
Then group and convert to curves.

    or
    select text
    go to shape tool
select letter node or several and nudge with the arrow key.
or use left mouse and ctrl to move left right.

not easy to explain that one and i dont think i have.

Or alternatively in Corel X3 (don’t know about previous versions)
Highlight all the letters you need to Kern, (at least 2 of them) then click on the "F" on the top toolbar that is your kerning tool and you do it by percentage value

Not sure how it is done in corel but as Andy has already said the kerning or spacing between letters will differ depending on which letters are next to each other. If the spacing is at 12.5mm at the size you need the text then you would probably be best leaving it that way as text will not look right if the letters are to close together. The other option might be to try and find a condensed version of the font you are using.

P.S doing it 2 at a time unless using a very even spaced font is better

If it is always spacing the letters too far apart, open a new document and without typing anything, change the spacing to 10mm there. Then go to the tools menu and hit save settings as default. That will change the way it usually does stuff.

That works for setting contour colours, fonts, page size and all types of stuff. If you are always doing large signs, it’s much quicker and easier if your default font size is much bigger so you don’t have to keep changing it every time you type.

    Toolbox.
    2nd. tool down.
    Select "Shape Tool".
Then adjust space between letters either individually or in proportion as a group.

The method I use is to use the node edit tool and each letter will have a small square next to it. This will allow you to edit the spacing on straight lines and on curved paths.
