  • How big is the UKSB website?

Posted by Robert Lambie on February 13, 2007 at 7:56 pm

having just completed doing my routine backup of UKSB last night i thought i would ask you all to vote as a bit of fun…

What file size do you recon UKSB website in total is?

before i go on… "i am NOT including VIDEO’s" All videos are on "UKSB Server 2" this is a second server dedicated to streaming video footage. so although video files should actually be included, i am not going to.

I just want to know what the combined file size of the actual site structure and all the files that reside on the UKSB Server 1, totals up to?

Who’s is going to be really clever and make a wild guess????
go on, see who gets closest… 3 guess’s each 😉

    1/ 200- 600mb
    2/ 600- 900mb
    3/ 1-5 gb

But I reckon most likely 1-5 gb

    Do I get a prize 😛

I have gone a little higher then most and before anyone asks, I do not know!

However, as rob stated this will be server 1 but there is in-fact 3 servers employed to run this site. :lol1: :lol1:

i meant three almost on the nose guesses :lol1: :lol1:

Lynn… im probably slightly out here and there but will give you an idea.

    A floppy disk = 1.3megabytes
    A zip disk = 100 megabytes = approx 100 floppy disks
    A Compact Disk CD = 750 megabytes = about 7 zip disks
    a DVD = 5 gigabytes = about 6.5 CD’s

    hope that is correct’ish 🙄 :lol1:

    Kinda correct

    1,024 Byte = 1 Kilobyte (KB)
    1,024 Kilobyte (KB) = 1 Megabyte (MB)
    1,073,741,824 Bytes = 1 Gigabyte (GB)

    HD Floppy = 1.44MB
Zip = Various sizes available but 100MB is equal to around 70ish Floppies
    CD = 650MB or 700MB
    DVD = 4.7GB

I’m guess as its all database run, site is around the 1.5 GB mark

    "everyone is wrong" :lol1:

in actual fact, the combined file total of "UKSB Server 1" = 18.4 Gigabytes
which does NOT include our database or video files.

i regularly back the site up but as i have just bought a new hard drive to back the site onto i thought ide run a "from scratch" site backup… took nearly 2 full days of downloading 😕 😮 :lol1:

LOL 😛 hmm… i clicked the next close option… rob how are you actually finding this out ?

Rob, Can you go Folder / properties and write the actual "Size" and the "Size on Disk" values which are in Bytes please?

Just want to be certain 😀

im daft dave, but not daft enough to get the size wrong when it tells me i had 98. something gigabytes available (partitioned drive) with 18.4 gig used etc etc left… it also gives me it in bytes or whatever… which is something like 18,493,000,000 i dont have it connected to my comp just now but i can send you screen shots and more should you need more proof :lol1:
i think the fact it has taken two days and nights to download the whole thing should tell you ive not added some zeros. :lol1: :lol1: (i have 8meg broadband)

ill be honest, i reckoned about 3gig… i have never taken any notice of file size… it was purely the time it took to download the lot in one go that kept me checking and thinking "when the hell is this going to stop?", as i wanted to get some stuff uploaded onto the servers for demos the past couple of days. 🙄

    BEATS ME! 😳 :lol1:

ide guess its due to many things….

    Site structure "files"
    File Swapping "files" forum
    Gallery Images "files" Forum
    Graphic Help "files" forum
Countless Image "files" in Picture Tutorials Forum
    Images "files" in Signextra Pages
    Homepage images "files"

UKSB has Thousands upon thousands of pages… most consisting of images files of some description.
unlike other sign sites that penny pinch with tiny image file allowance for just about anything… UKSB actually tries to enforce that our upload facilities are used to prevent back page information becoming useless due to broken external image links and the like.

the size of the site is huge, but when you take all these files being viewed and downloaded by our MONTHLY traffic count of around 200 thousand unique visits, our dedicated servers really do take a pounding.
"UKSB Server 1" gets an everage of 3/4 of a million pages viewed each month thats a hell of allot of bandwidth i can tell you. 😀

Rob isnt the site dynamic? Meaning the PHP scripts retrieve data from the database?

Also is your server linux based or windows?

If its linux when you make your back up make sure to compress your backup file before downloading it will save you tones of bandwith.

Does the 18gb include the operating system? Don’t forget if the 18gb is the disk usuage it includes the operating system and the database. The database are stored in files on the partion.

i thought he might be quoting a figure off the control panel… which would mean operating systems etc. Another thing in my experience is log files, these can get quite big.

I suspect it’s Rob’s secret goat porn collection that got downloaded. :lol1: 😉

    jason,
jason the mian (server 1) for the site is on a managed dedicated server so i dont think i have access to the operating system on the server to be able to download anything else other than site structure and files.
im dumb to all this mate, so if that sounds naive, its because i do not know :lol1: ide have to ask my web guy…

the dedicated video (server 2) is a different setup though… but as i said, i havent included this in the total file size.

    dave…
im just quoting from what i have downloaded with ftp software onto a fresh hard drive on my comp mate.

As for my goat porn? Dont you like h0rny women mate? 😉
