  • How big could I make this image?

Posted by Warren Beard on March 11, 2009 at 12:24 pm

    Hi All

    I’m looking at wrapping my MWB Transit and have found an image I really like and works great but the largest size they have on stock is;

    3072 x 2048 pixels @ 3.94MB
    (26cm x 17.3cm) – 118.1 px/cm

Will this be good enough to enlarge to about 1900mm high?

I don’t want to buy the image if I can’t use it and am not sure how to work out if it will be adequate?

    cheers

    Warren

Warren, I use Photozoom Pro which is stunning in enlarging images.
You just type in the physical size you want and it’s done in seconds.
You have to see it to believe it.
It’s essential when punters come to you with tiny web images they want to use but of course you don’t tell them it’s so easy to enlarge!

Can vouch for this program too. We don’t use it often but it has paid for itself many times over.

I tried it on a few images and found it wasn’t a great deal better than Photoshop.

I also just tried in Photoshop and is not much difference really,

so back to my original question then before I spend lots of money will I be able to get a decent quality finish at that size?

    cheers

I think so yes. Most wraps are done with images of that sort of size. It’s usually the best you can get.

I would say the photo was took with a 6 megapixel camara so my thoughts are yes also 😕

Just tried an image in photoshop and photozoom. I think I’ll stick with photoshop. There is a difference but not enough to warrant paying out extra for this. Suppose it’s ok for someone trying to print pictures at home
    but not for business.

It does depend a lot on the image type for good results,
here is a cheapie, and some free stuff that is a plugin for photoshop.

I have used it in signlab as it comes in the editing tools, sometimes its good but not always

I think if you zoom in on the image done in both programs by the same amount, Photozoom removes the jaggies from edges.

I have Photozoom and I think it is better than just resampling in PhotPaint. I can’t compare to Photoshop as I never use it. Just resampling tends to soften the image slightly including definite lines, Photozoom seems to keep lines fairly crisp. Photozoom has several modes of resizing and different modes can produce different results.
Is it worth the money? I think so but its possible that Photoshop has better resampling up than PhotoPaint.

Never used Photozoom but I’ll have a look at it, sounds good.

I rate the Alien Skin photoshop plugin called Blow Up 2. Not cheap at $249 but I’ve consistently had stunning results.

Hi Warren, you request is a 400 % upscale, I assume that u use photoshop.
Ur original size in 100 dpi is Length 780x height 520mm (x4 =2080mm(u need 1900mm)).

U can go to image menu —> image size, make sure to check "resample image" – set width and height to % instead of mm/cm ONLY increase size 110% at a time. Click the selector at the bottom and chose "bicubic smoother (best for enlargement) (U need to do this every time until u reach ur final size.(for some reason PS resets selector im imagesize dialog box)

Hopes this helps – u could make an action to do this ;o)
Also after resampling ur image goto filter —> noise —> median and tweak it a LITTLE bit.(look at image)

After u can increase a bit with unsharp mask (also in filter menu)
Phew! hope u get my english…
