We drove past these guys the other day fitting their homemade sign off a ladder made from 2 x 2 – I really don’t believe what we have to compete with these days 🙄

Colin, this IS what we are u against mate… 😕

the sad part is these clowns will NEVER get pulled for their crap signs and death trap ladders. local authorities and the like will never chase them because they will be closed down tomorrow and start up as a plumber, roofer, whatever the next day. its the likes of us lot trying to make an honest living, paying our taxes, employing staff and overheads that are constantly being hit with all the red tape that are targeted.

Well, this client wouldn’t pay what I would ask anyway since the quality of design/materials or professional tools/ladders is obviously not his priority. We cannot/do not have to compete with them, because it isn’t a competition in any shape or form?

That’s what you get for phoning the job centre and asking if they have any Poles…

    Peter,

Poles have different carnation. I know- I am one. And we do have proper ladders.

    Very true Robert…
they are not competition, but they do bother me with the regards to them being allowed to trade in the first place. coupled by them devaluing our industry with ridiculous pricing in various aspects of our work, digital printing, vehicle wrapping and as shown here, general signage installation and materials used.
too many customers see price before anything these days… never giving a second thought to false economy. sad days but its what we are all faced with. 😕

Double entendre Robert; Poles as in ladder poles.

    Peter,

I got the pun- no worries. Whilst on the subject- during my recent chat with Harry from Edward Mathias I heard about some Poles going round with few rolls of vinyl and a plotter on the back of the van. They would pull outside shops and offer business owners cheap window graphics on the spot! I must say- this never occurred to me, but then neither did the 2×2 ladders. A tale was told by a not overly happy local sign maker, who priced up the job, produced visuals and got a go ahead only to find out later in the day the job was snatched from under his nose!

mobile sign makers arent new mate. there’s been several dodging about for years in my area. mind you, not heard of any in a while though.
to be honest, i dont see the appeal, far too many downsides to it and that’s even IF its a substantial sized box van. 😕

Robert I would have to disagree, if your just hitting a shopping centre to offer cheap window graphics then you don’t need to carry a lot of equipment so could probably manage out of the back of a normal sized van. Different if you were offering a range of services and had to carry a lot of gear.
May not be ideal but you learn to cope with the space you have available. I used to wonder how people managed to work from home but some people do it very well as we all know.
