  • home made contravision print with white ink – possible?

Posted by OwenTaylor on October 6, 2011 at 3:49 pm

After getting another request for contravision that sticks to the inside of the window, I think I might have though of a solution. The process would go as follows:

    1. In your preferred graphics package, take your image and using a clipping mask, cut hundreds of small regular holes in it so that it looks kind of perforated. Create a second file of the same dimensions with the holes in the same place and assign white spot colour to flood coat it. Then create a third file, as per the second but colour it black.

    2. Print the image in reverse on clear with CMYK.

    3. Register and flood coat the image with white. If the white spot colour file is correct, hopefully the holes will more or less line up. This will give you a reverse facing solid image for application to the inside of a window.

    4. To create the contravision effect, now overprint the white ink with black ink. Again hopefully all the holes will line up.

    5. Finally trim and apply.

Is this possible? Would it work? Any potential issues? I don’t have any experience of white ink – is it opaque enough?

    Thanks,
    Owen

    think you are about right.
unfortunately the holes will be clear vinyl which you will not be able to see through as well as if they were not there, like real controvision ?. cutting the holes is a no no.

the vinyl will not like the amount of ink you are possibly proposing. if you don’t mind the clear being there in the clear bits i think 50% black would do as the final colour.

    this will and has worked.
    print in reverse to clear
    back with white vinyl
then back again with mat black and cut strips not holes through the 3 layers

Surely with all this printing and hassle it would be easier to just buy inside fitting contravision!

    Hi

I was sure that you couldn’t get one way vision film to apply to the inside but I think William smith do have a product, as I recall you had to have a really hot laminator to make it work but can’t remember the details – may be someone else has heard if it?

    Cheers

    reverse print onto clear.
    laminate in white.
    laminate in black.

cut a pattern of lines, waves, whatever, from the thru the three layers of vinyl and apply.

same idea as this but using printed vinyl.

it is best to run test prints to se what variation of the lines should be. in the demo its 2mm lines, 2mm space, but with print i think we used 3mm lines, 1.5 space, cant remember but still worked. as i say, have a play.

also, from memory, i think its better to darken the image down a bit as it has a sharper appearance when the spaces are created.

    quote Lorraine Clinch:

Can’t get it Stuart, no such thing.

    But it is.
    See here

it has been mentioned every time this subject comes up that I’m surprised that people still dont know about it.

I got quoted 130 for 1m of the internal contra from W Smith this year. Needless to say I lost the job at the price. There are far better prices from non trade suppliers who offer the same product!

Wm Smith don’t always seem to be a trade supplier, they are mentioned here a lot and we use them sometimes but you can download a pricelist from their website. I’ve had customers come in and show me and I’ve had to tell them just to order direct and we will fit. I’m not selling material for 0% markup
