  • Holiday Shutdown reminder (Solvent Printers)

Hi, I went in on Sunday after being shut since Xmas Eve and switch it on to print off a small amount of print to keep to fluids going, if your not working this week also then it is advisable.

The test print I had revealed that my cyan had a few gaps missing, I did do maintenance on the machine before we left, I managed to get them back.

What I didn’t do but was aware of it, my waste bottle was full, so my ten minutes visit turned into half an hour.

Also advisable to Left the lever so that the grip rollers are in mid-air, can cause flat spots which happened on our early mutoh machine.

I will be going in maybe later in the week also just to help it along and check the post.

Did ours yesterday – no problem. πŸ˜€

Mind you, the JV33 seems to be much more tolerant of neglect than the JV3.

Of course if you had bought a Roland you could go home happy in the knowledge that the machine looks after itself. πŸ˜€

That’s a surprise, I understood Rowland lavished much care and tenderness on his machines, my poor Roland, on the other hand…

My machine is a small VersaCamm and provided it is left turned on it carries out it’s own cleaning cycle on a regular basis, I think once every 24 hours.

A versacamm is very similar to a JV3, the problem with all printers is if they are left alone for long periods, the nozzles can block and you need heads replaced.

1: How good are your pumps?
2: Have you got a poor wiper blade in?
3: Have you checked to see if waste is overflowing?
4: Do you have any dried ink on your capping station seals?

I think all solvent printers have a maintenance cycle of around 24 hours but its not good enough. The JV3 suffers from an ink that can attract dust, so when the head is over the capping station especially when it is ‘sucking’, there is a lot of ink in contact with rubber, nozzles, etc., so this ink dries and then doesn’t have a perfect seal between capping station and head, then your in trouble.

The ink needs to be moving regularly, the heads on a versacamm are within an enclosure, so it is possible that they do not attract as much dust as other machines.

Well it would seem to me that unlike a lot of people on here, my machine probably spends more time asleep than working and to date I’ve not really had any problems as you describe.
The machine was serviced just before Christmas and nothing was amiss.

I don’t use my mimaki that much, not like its printing 8 hours a day, anyway.
It would be interesting to get an informed opinion from an engineer or supplier as to what needs to be done if leaving a printer for extended periods.
I have left mine for 4-5 days without any problems.

Not doubting what others say in their experience, but a definitive answer would be good, there seems to be quite a few opinions, on what should or should not be done, but surely any manufacturer would not sell a machime that could not cope with an anual shut down, is that not the the point of having a self clean schedule?

well when we used to have JV3’s in the early years we had suppliers offering information on what to do at xmas shutdowns, some of them were offering flushing cartridge solutions etc. I thought that was a waste of money and just use the thing over the xmas period.
Then we had a hand full of posts in January, ‘cant get my printer going’ and over the years we been saying, yep sounds like you need an engineer.

Anyway, what is a service ? is a service when they rip out the pumps, replace with fresh dampers and just look over the machine?

Maintenance by the operator is what that matters then you dont need engineers. I have noidea what you need to do to a versacam or any roland, might not even be anything lol

The JV3 does require swab cleaning on the capping and that keeps it working well

after 6 years of using my soljet as Dave says these are the most important things to keep correct.

if the caps don’t seal correctly or the pumps malfunctioning it does not matter how many times it goes to clean its self, it won’t do it.

any way 3 -4 days ok else a small print a day keeps the engineer away
