phil, this might sound daft but… in weather like this, are you fitting the plane in a hanger or outside? either way, does the planes metal hold allot of cold?
im just saying that as i was fitting some huge JCB’s today and as you all probably be aware, doesnt matter how hot your guns are, that metal isnt heating up. ๐Ÿ˜• also makes the vinyl hell of a brittle. ๐Ÿ˜•

  • Peter Normington

    Rob
    I can part answer that,
the hard bits on a JCB are very solid, and on the whole made from steel, or the big bit on the back is cast steel,. A titchy air gun would have little effect on that sort of mass,
however a plane is made out of aluminium alloy, and is a better conducter of heat than steell, skin is 2-3mm thick, however there is a lot of it to warm up, so the best way to do it is in the hanger. JCB, or jumbo, you need a frikin great hot air gun…

hi pete, yeh, i know what you mean mate… the boom and the back ballast on the jcb is a mass of steel.. and your right heat gun has no effect. even the one i use and thats hottest outside liester heat torch range i can find. 600 degrees bosch 3 settings… still doesnt do a thing and i had two in one hand hitting it. & that was (inside a huge workshop with huge blast heat 10 ft away ๐Ÿ˜• )
i thought maybe because the plane has to with stand severe temps both ways it may be resistant to the gun also… well in this weather anyway. ๐Ÿ˜•

The planes are done in the hanger where its heated, in fact by the time you get high enough in a cherry picker to apply the tail fin you tend to sweat in a t shirt even on a freezing day.
Previously I have worked on planes when guys stood at floor level are in jumpers and coats and on the tail fin you just cant take enough off to keep cool.

    Rob,

Can I just say that I have always suspected that you have had something up your sleeve, but I am stunded and speechless to see what you have up your jumper. It must be the only reason for the headless photo and where the fairy must go I have no idea.

    Regards Russ.
