    sorry, cant help either martin…

wondering if i could get any help myself…
bought myself a Chinese cutter from eBay and it arrived this morning. had a funny noise coming from it so i opened the cover to have a look at the motor. there was two little mice in running wheels powering the cutting head. i asked them where the driver software was but none of them spoke a word of English.
not amused by this i called the technical support number for the machine… the support person couldn’t tell me anything about the machine as they where just a 17 year old kid being an ebay sales middle man. that said, he was very sympathetic and offered to sell me some discounted Viagra for my troubles.

Make sure to take everything out of the van, measure the floor twice and cut the vinyl once, then lay it down with some contact glue, making sure any lines in the design are straight, be careful when you put the fridge and washing machine in though, you could rip it!!!

The best bit of advice I heard Martin was how to get rid of bubbles….

Instead of using a pin to puncture the vinyl and let the air out, go inside the van and drill small holes to let the air out from behind the vinyl. This way you avoid putting little holes on the vinyl surface. :lol1:

Ok so I haven’t forgotten how to apply vinyl but there is a serious side to this and a lot of things that are worrying me, mostly to do with me not being able to cope and making myself as ill as I was before again.

Although I have started to do odd bits and pieces again over the last couple of months I think this is probably the first van I have done in over a year, fortunately it is dead simple but I know it will take me 3 times longer than it should because of me getting tired.

Martin just take your time, make sure you prep it right, the weather reports say it’s going to be cold this weekend, make sure you keep warm especially wear a hat. Just do one bit at a time have a rest and a hot drink tea, soup etc. Don’t set your self a time limit take it easy you’ll be fine.
I’m not being patronizing here just don’t want you to get I’ll again.

    Martin,
Can’t you get someone else to do this for you? Your Health is far more important than your business mate. I have suffered over the past 6 months due to long hours and knob heads giving me stress.
1 blood cell bursting in my brain knocking me out for nearly a week, and a minor heart attack 2 months ago. I know it’s not easy mate and no one can fault you for trying, but do try and get someone to do this for you.

I thought you were having a laugh Martin, sorry.

Take your time, have a laugh and enjoy it. If you bugger anything up, it doesn’t really matter, does it?

For what it’s worth, I still get a bit nervous when I go out to fit any job. After 20 years! That’s a bit weird innit?

Andy, it was a bit tongue in cheek, so I was sort of having a bit of a joke but as I have had to explain to a couple of other people it is not really this van that is bothering me, its the fact that I am now starting to get a bit more work and I am a bit worried I won’t be able to control it properly. Its never been easy for me to say no to a customer.

I got CFD about 2 years ago through overworking, stress ….etc….etc and although I am starting to get a little bit better it takes years to make a full recovery if you ever do so my biggest worry is that I end up back where I was about 18 months ago when I disappeared off the boards into thin air !!!!

You know the answer Martin. Take on what you can manage. Sod customers, think of yourself. They’ll accept reasonable lead times if you stick to your guns. I have been guilty of letting customers dictate my working times, not any more.

I stand by my earlier sentiment: be cool man, nothing is a fuss.

NO it shows you care about your work.

martin its only the last 12 mths that i have been able or learnt to say sorry i cant do that job in the alloted time and most of the time the customer will respect that a lot more than letting them down and you still will probably get the job. but under you terms. keep getting better.

couldn’t agree more with whats been said…
take your time regardless… just tell them instead of 2 hours for their van, come back at closing time and the van will be ready. do it at your pace and do it right, don’t rush it and fluff things up. you will get more stressed that way.

    best of luck mate…

Martin, didnt mean to take the p either, your health is more important than anything, anything! (old Irish saying………’They will manage quite well if you are in the graveyard’) they are only paying you to do a van, take your time, do it on your terms. Best of luck and health.

    martin,
Never met you, don’t know you, but I read these boards every day for help and advice – and you’ve replied many times with words of sound advice for everyone. You know you can do anything you want in the sign game – just don’t do anything you don’t want to do. You will be fine, just be cool and take your time and if it starts to hurt, just shout on here. Plenty of top people ( friends) to help out.
    Stick at it.

    Jim.

Try not to get stressed out about anything Martin (easier said than done I know) try and enjoy the work you are doing which is very satisfying and rewarding, and good luck with the van this weekend 😀

Thanks for all the support and advice people, I think I posted this as much as a warning to others as anything.

I know all the answers already and have given other people the same advice myself on occasions, its a classic case of do what I say not what I do !!!!

Phill, you hit the nail on the head to be honest, I do enjoy the industry and I do enjoy the work I do which is why I don’t want to give it all up.
I just need to learn to be more business and learn to say to people, thats the price, thats when I can have it done by and if that is not suitable well thanks for giving me the chance to quote but you will have to go else where.
