Hi Jim,
I had that happen to me just before xmas.
Its a pain, especially as I lost all my saved paperwork for a civil court case.
I went out and bought a Maxtor external HD . I know its shutting the door when the horse has bolted….
Maybe you might want to do something similar. -
hi jim ….welcome mate ….hope your getting things sorted …pcs …..who needs them ? 🙁

has a tech checked your data correctly?
Put the bad drive in the bay of a working PC (Not as main drive)
Download the Free http://www.uneraser.com/
Let it scan, there is 2-3 levels of scanning, some which wont recover the names.
It should list out all the files (the Root of the harddrive contains something called the MBR which is a list of all files), this might need rebuilding.
The when you buy the full version, it will recover the files, i think it allows you to test it before you buy.
If you harddrive is doing the dreaded ‘click of death’ .. tick tick tick or bang bang bang, then thats bad. There is a way of getting them working again, by sending to a specialist company but they are normally expensive. One method they use is to buy the identical harddrive used and to take out the actually disks and put them into a new drive (same model), very hard process and needs to be done in a clean room.
It has been known to hit the hard drive, the platter head gets stuck.. but becareful! I am not to blame.!
If cool and not used for a time, drive might spin up for 2-3 minutes from cold, might be enough time to salvage.
Ok. hope that helps
