Hi all, just thought I’d throw my two peneth in the mix…

I’ve been in the IT business for 20 years and for a long time have avoided recommending PC’s for various reasons (mainly cos there electronic, and any can fail at any time – usually after I make a recommendation!)… :lol1:

However, if anyone is out there looking for a new PC (I read a few posts), it would be hard for me to walk on by and not mention the new Dell PC.

Now I’ve never been a fan of Dell, or any other brand to be honest, but they have come up trumps with there new machine, and the price is unbelievable (if you order carefully!)

The machines are called Vostro, specifically the the 200 model, and here goes for anyone who’s interested…

    Dual Core 2 1.66Mhz PROCESSOR(S)
    2Gb RMA MEMORY
    8x USB2 Ports (VERY HANDY)
    16x CD/DVD Re-writer
    Integrated memory card reader (multi-formats)
    Wireless Keyboard and Wireless Mouse
    Basic (but sufficient) Speakers
22" Widescreen Monitor (AWESOME!!! in every sense)
    Oh and it’s black 😎

    and here’s the best bit

twin (YES!) twin 320GB Hard Drives on a RAID1 array (mirrored), what this basically means is that your pretty well protected from a hard drive failure and data loss. If one drive fails then the second kicks in automatically and your (in theory) safe to take your backups and move on. This is no excuse to not backup data mind! it just gives you peace of mind and that for any business machine is worth paying for.

The main things I look for are reliability, specification (will it do the job for me), build quality, service and price – pretty much in that order too.

This unit is quick, reliable, great specification, build quality is good (better than average), service is covered for 1 year instead of 3 (but for the price, you could almost afford a new one each year!), and the price!

£592 including VAT, delivery, 1 years service, Microsoft Vista Business and Norton Save & Restore (15 month license).

Machine comes preloaded and the operating system is on the hard disk, so take about 30/50 Gb off your drive capacity of 320Gb and that’s what you can expect to be available for your programs etc.

If anyone wants any more advice or part codes please feel free to post.

Hope someone takes advantage of these units, with the 22" TFT it really is a steal!

    All the best,

    Steve

Dell always been a fav with me, also 20 years in the IT biz. But the support stinks to high-heavan. Instead of building PC’s for the office, I bought a load of Dell Dimensions a year ago, damn good move in my view as they are quality

Nice offer, xmas rush will show some cheap prices as I have seen 500gb harddrives now hit the £60-80 mark

Never really been a fan of Dell but just bought a laptop off them, got an awesome deal (£1100 worth for £700) they must be discontinuing them but paid the same price for a much higher spec and 3 year warranty. and i’m super happy with it. Make sure you call them though otherwise no discounts or offers.

    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&kc=D4X20001&l=en&oc=D10V01B&rbc=D10V01B&s=bsd

Checked it over and just like good ole Dell, the package has changed again, maybe for the better though! Try this link and see what you can build for under £600! pretty good value I think.

Looks like the lower end processors are gone, so your looking 2Ghz and upwards (not a bad thing) just may be a couple of quid more.

Bought a Dell Laptop, Insprion 6400 last Xmas, not missed a beat either, called on support once and they gave a fix, not had any need to complain myself, but know others have in the past.

Be nice to think they have there act together, certainly worth while checking out I’d say.
