  • Help with sticker material problem !!

Posted by Shaun Cleary on February 5, 2011 at 10:57 am

We print a lot of stickers on metalmark MD3-200 & MDP- 200, we have had one job which were just samples (5 altogether) and the customer stated that the backing was coming off with the sticker.

We told him to send the stickers back, they have now arrived and as the customer said the backing is coming of with the stickers,.

The material we used was MD3-200 and this is the first time we have had this problem, I assume it is because the force was set too high?
Has anyone else every come across this problem is it us or the material??

    Here are the pictures ……

I would say it’s simply a case of the knife cutting too deep. Have you recently fitted a new blade?

Have to agree, it would indicated too much blade weight, but I’d have thought the amount of excessive weight needed to go right through the release finish would have come to light when you weeded it before sending it out. If it were cut that aggressively, I’d imagine it’d even feel different when handled after cutting. The fact you’ve done loads of these before and never had a problem, must indicate something’s amiss

If the sticker will peel nicely from the backing once the backing is torn away, it has to be weight, if it doesn’t, they could possibly have gotten damp.

Maybe they’re sent out unweeded Bob?

As all have said blade pressure, but as Bob pointed out if the backing paper gets damp this can exaggerate the problem.

I’ve had this were your fitting lettering to a vehicle and all the backing is coming off no problem, even though you may have cut with a little too much pressure, and a bead of water runs behind the backing paper and in that area the lettering will bring off the silicone layer.

This is the problem they are weeded and the blade force has evidently being put on too high but the blade has not cut through the whole backing paper.

We sent these out same day in a tube so unless damp has gotten in these over the course of travel which I can’t see as these where not wet on arrival.

I can’t understand how the sticker has brought some of the backing with it as I though the backing was 1 piece.

Here is another picture of the sticker removed with some backing left on…..

For almost sure, cut too deep, if you get backing paper wet then you would tend to have bits sticking to the adhesive but damp over a period of time might produce this effect too (except the silicon layer has definitely been cut through.

That’s the thing Shaun, the backing if effectively two layers, the sprayed on silicon top layer and the paper layer beneath; do test cuts regularly to set depth or if changing vinyl types.

Me again, just came into my mind that you have used print and cut, don’t know what type of printer or ink you have used but cutting into printed material can be problematic, for instance dark colours or high ink density with most inks will soften the material more and require less cutting pressure as will cutting with the heaters on if you are using machines with heaters and also cutting straight after printing will have a different result to waiting a while.

Lot’s to think about for just a simple procedure, keep your eye and mind on what is happening is best thing I think.
