  • HELP WITH PAINTING OVER PRINTED VINYL

Hi all, appologies if this is in the wrong forum..but not too sure..

Anyway, i have a customer who wants me to print an image onto some vinyl, using our versacamm with eco sol max inks so that it can be put onto a motor bike petrol tank and lacquered over to make it look almost like it was airbrushed on.

Can anyone recommend a vinyl to use, we have tried a sample piece using oracal 3951 (i think..) and he said it appeared to crinkle when he painted over it.

    Any help would be appreciated

    cheers

If it crinkles he is spraying the lacquer to heavily, you need to build up the layers in light coats and let it dry thoroughly between coats.

I agree with Mike, when painting any decals with clear coat i always give a very light gripper coat, this then needs to flash off for 3-5 mins then next coat. This stops most problems with clear coat and as Mike said a heavy coat allows the solvents in the paint to attack the decal

alternatively we have painted over printed vinyls after they had been laminated in anti-graffiti film to protect the print

You can seal with water based transparent AA paint before using solvents for extra protection.
