Help with Overlaps
Posted by Paul Humble on October 26, 2009 at 4:30 pmIve been sent this EPS file to cut from 2 single colour vinyls. I am having a problem with the over and underlapping as the designer has just overlaid three lots of text to get the effect.
How do I make the text all one layer ready to be cut from vinyl in Corel X3?
Cheers
Paul

It would take me an hour to explain all that needs to be done. In short, you need to do a bit of practice with the WELD and TRIM tools.

Cheers Andy,
ive been playing around with the weld and trim buttons and im quite used to them but I cant get my head round the under and overlaps. Ill keep bashing on.

That’s why I don’t get on with Corel-all those layers!
I had a bash in Signlab, it is complicated, but do-able, although it would take a while. I think you’ll need to make lots of copies, and weld bits individually, starting to weld more as it gets less complicated. Presumably this will be in just 2 colours, grey & black? -
A quick 5 minutes in signlab, it should be ok but no bleed added
I wouldnt have a clue how to do it in corel,

The file looks a bit lousy in places where it has been created.
I sometimes find it easier to change the colour of an object just to make it more visible while welding etc.

Well Paul
25 people have downloaded your file,
you must have got them all thinking?Peter

for what it’s worth I think it’s a nice idea but it doesn’t work too well…..I think it’s too busy and not enough contrast in the colours

Hope this helps??

Hi Paul, I tried it a different way.
Convert the design to a jpeg. Then do a trace. While you are in the trace program combine all the same colours. When you bring it back into draw you will have all the black , grey and white grouped together in their own colour groups. Ie; colour separated for your cutter. You will have to do some node elimination around some of the letters but it works pretty well.

Thanks everyone, superb as ever. I tried altering the colours to weld but just couldnt get my head around it. Im seriously considering investing in Signlab.

Looks like the grey and black is already trimmed so has but joints so even SL would be a struggle, that said if you were to expand one colour just be a fraction SL could use one of its very good weld options to to extend only bits that everlapped. This is not possible in Draw at the moment. I’ve attached a SL welded effort

Struggling with attaching files, email me and I’ll send it direct

I thought maybe 2 layers would be neater, without but joints
