  • Help with material choice needed for skylight type windows

Hi everyone, its been a while eh.
I need some advice on a job I need to quote on, Its for some roof skylights as pictured.
I need to cover them with something that will let light through.
The are made of 45mm frosted glass, and when dry are fine, as they are opaque enough but as you can see when wet they show the frame for the light fitting through them. the builders are concerned it looks a bit tatty and unprofessional and seeing as the windows cost 4.5k a piece they want it to look a little more "finished" frosted etch would be fine but would also be slippy if walked on, and would also probably need replacing from time to time due to the sun being on them all summer etc, this could all have been avoided had they contacted me before fitting as i could have applied it to the underside.
They are all now fixed and in situ so the only option is to apply something to the top, and whereas window etch will suffice and be opaque enough we have the risk of people walking on them and slipping, I can put warning signs up but was wondering if anyone knows of any material like etch etc that has a non slip surface, I have advised them I can fit vinyl etch to them but cannot guarantee how long it will last as if someones up there in golf shoes or kids picking at it etc I cant say how long it will last even though its 7 year vinyl. so, is there any material that is non slip opaque and suitable for what I need, as I have asked about and cant seem to find anything more suitable. I also considered contravision etc but cant find anything more suitable.
    any ideas welcome.
    cheers
    Steve

Hexis supply an anti slip laminate which is slightly opaque, textured and obviously anti slip and hard wearing.

Easy to apply in situ but would warm up the edges a little if possible.

cheers John it needs to be as opaque as a decent window etch or more. when you say slightly opaque do you think it would be enough to keep the frame showing through as even when dry it is still visible

Probs not opaque enough as it is an over laminate.

What about using 2 layers – one an etch film and the anti slip on top.

possibly could do that, it just depends on cost really do you know the name or code of the laminate just on the hexis website now

mat floor graphic laminate, just a thought.
also may not want to stick to the etched surface too well.

    enjoy

Thats also the thought I had, the etched surface takes the window vinyl fine, not sure how tacky the floor graphic laminate is mind.

by its very nature floor graphic has to be very tacky but as has been said what about etch with a clear anti-slip over the top, don’t worry about the cost of a few quid given what they shelled out for the windows themselves

I would call APS and seek their advice

This might sound like a silly question but if it’s a lighting unit how do they intend to maintain it??

Surely at some point Tubes or lamps will need changing??

Ahh Martin I love your ability to think of something completely irrelevant 😀 😀 😀

The clue would be in sky light I guess there a room below with lights that you would change in the normal fashion or am I over complicating things 😉

Got no Idea what I have ever done to upset you John but your entitled to you opinion of me obviously, just sorry you think me such a fool.

If the units had been fitted with Tubes rather than lamps then the inside tray would have needed to be hinged to allow access. Not ideal but there might have been enough room to still apply to the inside as Steve would have done before they were fitted.
