  • Help with drag and drop for the mac

    Hi everyone
I have been using PCs for ages, but I just got a new macbook.
On the PC i can drag a JPEG from the desktop into illustrator or photoshop, and the program will immediately recognise it and place it on the artboard.

However, the Mac wont do this. Nothing happens. Additionally, if I copy from outside the program and paste into Illustrator, I get a message "Quick time and a decompressor are needed to see this picture."
This is a real pain, specially with a small screen and a trackpad.

Is this normal? Or am I missing a crucial piece of software? Macs always used to be the leaders in this type of thing, I am convinced that when I used to use macs a decade ago this was possible to do even then – but I might be dreaming..

Macbook pro, OSX 10.6.8, Illustrator CS Photoshop CS.

You should be able to drag the Jpg to the illustrator icon in the dock and it will open, been mac user for years and always worked for me.

Me too, files open OK on all our macs.
If you post the file or mail it I can try on mine and see if it’s the file that’s the problem.
Or does it happen with all files?

Thanks but I think you misunderstand. Illy on the mac has no problem opening jpegs as new files, I can even drag them over the ai icon in the dock and they will open. but when I want to drag a jpeg onto the artboard of an existing file I am working on, then nothing.

I must open the file in illustrator, copy, switch windows to the file I want to place the file into, and paste – or I use the place function.

On the pc (xp) I can drag files right off the desktop, photoshop, or even off a website, and drop them where I want on the artboard in illustrator. The system simply knows what I am trying to achieve and responds positively.

This occurs with all files, illustrator and photoshop, on the mac. It is not a fatal problem, but it is certainly a major drawback, and very clumsy, when I am using a 13 inch screen, and I would have thought there would be fix for it.

    And psd files place OK.

    Quite.
So I must have something wrong with my system.
I have done google searches and come up with others having the same issue as me, but no solutions.
